Whitelines Test Team

Couloirs and Croissants – testing out in Tignes. Photo: Jordan Tiernan

A

s much as we love riding snowboards, there are simply too many models on the market for our editorial crew to be able to try them all. That’s where the Whitelines Test Team comes in.

We have scoured the contact book to recruit a small army of experienced riders – including ex-pros, snowboard coaches, instructors and guides, retail staff, and lifelong shredders – to help review the latest kit for our Buyer’s Guide.

Many of our team live full-time in the mountains; others attended one or more of the industry demo events throughout the winter; all of them share a burning passion for snowboarding and many years of mountain knowledge.

“When you’re reading a gear review – especially snowboard kit – it can help to know a little more about the person who tested it”

When you’re reading a gear review – especially snowboard kit – it can help to know a little more about the person who tested it. What’s their riding style like? Are they a similar height, weight and foot size? What gets them stoked on riding?

Ultimately, buying any snowboard gear is something of a subjective purchase, so anyone dispensing advice should ideally be on your wavelength.

With this in mind, scroll down for a brief introduction to each of the riders on our team.

  • Snowboarding since: The dawn of time
  • Height: 5’11” (181cm)
  • Weight: 13st (82kg)
  • UK Shoe Size: UK 9.5

Who’s your favourite rider and why: David Benedek. In his pomp he slayed it all – powder, pipe, park, piste, street – and still found time to push the creative envelope. Plus, he’s just a super nice guy.

First ever board: 1996/7 Lib Tech Jamie Lynn 153 – the one with the girl and the guitar on the tail. I bought it from Rollersnakes in the spring sales and was soooo stoked on it.

Only trouble was the fragile cap construction, and I managed to delam it at some point. I swung a new one via the warranty which I was well chuffed with at the time, but now I wish I’d just kept it for posterity and bought a new one instead.

Board Preference: Something mid-flexing and stable that I can take from park to pow – basically, your classic ‘all mountain’ board.

Who’s your favourite rider and why: Everyone has their all-time favourite, but at the moment I’m really stoked on what Mons Røisland is doing with his snowboard. The recent edit he put up, chucking some no grab spins were so smooth and effortless. It has definitely given me some hectic winter buzz forsho!

What were your season’s highlights: The highlight of winter was filming a new Slice ‘n’ Dice for Nidecker Snowboards that should be out before the season begins. We did this edit in Samoens, France, with dirt, slush, bulletproof mornings and stiff coffee.

Favourite rider: Keijiro Kasahara, aka Doggy. If snowboarding had a voice, it would be in Japanese with wonky subtitles.

First ever board: Generics Special, bought ex-hire from an Aviemore shop in May 1999. Currently propping up a wobbly bookcase beside my desk.

Board preference: Freestyle twin boards, sometimes with directional elements but usually true twin – and always wide. It’s good to have something to take to dry slope once its snow life is over.

Describe your riding style in 3 words: Surfy, playful and fun!

Who’s your favourite rider and why: This is a tough one.. from the girls it’s a toss-up between Anna Gasser for constantly raising the bar for women’s slopestyle, Christy Prior for oozing style and straight-up steeze, and Leanne Pelosi for shredding the most amazing backcountry lines that make me want to drop everything and get on the next plane to Japan/Alaska/Canada/anywhere with POW! Guys-wise.. I’ve always been a fan of Arthur Longo – man’s a magician when it comes to pulling tricks out of the bag so effortlessly.

What were your season’s highlights: This season was so much fun, packed with plenty of variety which is just how I like it! Teaching the local Grom Squad (aged3+) to link turns all the way down Palafour and take on its many side-hits was definitely up there, as was my trip to Krasnoyarsk in the heart of Russian Siberia, coaching for GB Snowsport at the Winter Universiade (University Olympics) and cheering on the rest of Team GB in their respective sports.

The Girls Who Ride event in March was a remarkable day where we pulled the local crew together and provided an amazing experience for the many female skiers and snowboarders in the area. Just as well we rallied the troops as 96 ladies turned up for coaching, dancing (to female DJs), free stash and a BBQ in the glorious sunshine.

Oh, and I can’t forget to mention taking a win in my back garden… literally riding the Fingers on the Tignes stop of the Freeride World Tour and walking away with the coveted golden statue! Not sure how I managed to fit it all in around teaching lessons to my lovely clients, sharing amazing adventures and memories with each and every one!

What were your season’s highlights: An epic powder day in Sainte Foy when I thought my season was going to fizzle out due to injury. Hiked to the top of the Fogliettaz twice and had two life-affirming runs in snow so good my wrecked knee never felt a thing.
