Why we chose the Zeal Beacon Snowboard Goggles: This isn’t just a goggle, this is a visual revolution.

Google defines Zeal as “great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective.” If the cause is incredible vision on the mountain, Zeal’s innovative new designs are par for the course.

New for 2020/21 bring out your inner air traffic controller with the Zeal Beacon. The big standout feature is the ground-breaking, potentially game-changing, ‘Observation Deck Technology’. This tilted cylindrical polycarbonate lens offers a far larger field of vertical peripheral vision. It’s touted to increase your range of vision a whopping 20%. Who needs a third eye when you’ve got a Beacon.

In laymans terms, basically the lens bends underneath where the bottom rim usually sits like a ‘J’ shape giving you more to play with. It allows you to see more of the line below you while simultaneously blocking direct light and eliminating reflection from your cheeks.

Offering unrivalled views of the mountain scene beneath the rider, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see why they called it ‘Observation Deck Technology’. As Zeal put it on their website: “Get ready to change your perspective on winter forever.”

“The lens is tapered to match the curve of your eye, offering optically correct visuals”

If that wasn’t enough the lens is tapered to match the curve of your eye, offering optically correct visuals and allowing for a close fit. Triple layer face foam with dual density padding keep the elements at bay, with a microfleece sitting against the skin to wick sweat and stray moisture.

Available with three different tiers of lenses; Optimum, Optimum Polarized and Optimum Polarized Automatic +. Each comes with 100% UV protection as standard, with Zeal’s Everclear Anti-Fog molecules permanently infused into lens material and Permashield Hardcoat offering long term scratch free durability.

Tester’s Verdict

Rob McCreathWhitelines

“I’m a real sucker for a blackout goggle lens or an artist collab on the strap, but no amount of vanity or irrelevant taste in style could stop the Beacons from being my standout goggles of the year. The vertical field of view on these things is absolutely outstanding and, let’s face it, that’s where us riders need it the most.

Whether you’re just riding, rummaging around your backpack, kicking some sketchy steps on a boot pack or lighting a rolly on the chair, the downward visibility is literally the same as not wearing goggles at all.

A bit like a good set of bindings, the perfect goggles are those that you forget you’re wearing altogether. That’s exactly how it felt to wear the Beacons.”
