The Luminaries Series | International Women’s Week

Reintroducing the Luminaries Series and our tribute to the women in snowboarding

As a team, one of our favourite projects in recent memory has been the Luminaries Series. We launched it last season on International Women’s Day as our way of paying homage to some of the most interesting and inspiring people in snowboarding.

Continuing this year, the series is dedicated to shining a light on some of the most noteworthy folks in our industry, documenting their rise in their given professions, and sharing some of their insights from along the way. More stories, more voices, more rad people.

“The camaraderie and genuine joy that emanated from the all riders was something that will stick with us”

“Hooooly fuck”- that’s a direct quote from us as we sat and watched the women’s Slopestyle finals in Beijing (word on the street is that last hit and resulting stomp from Zoi S-S clocked in at a monstrous 7.6 on the Richter Scale). We said the same thing when watching the mens, but for totally contrasting reasons…

The Olympics may be a bone of contention for some, but it’s an undeniable truth that during that event we saw the very best of snowboarding, and women’s freestyle was in the spotlight for all the right reasons. Not only the envelope pushing riding, but the camaraderie and genuine joy that emanated from the all riders was something that will stick with us.

And while we see women like Anna Gasser, Chloe Kim and Zoi Sadowski-Synnott (deservedly) topping podiums and winning hearts across the globe, what we often don’t see are the people doing the quiet slog behind the scenes. As Alba Pardot put it to us in her interview, “We want to show that there is so much more to an industry than the actual sport, how the industry is built from the ground up including athletes, shapers, event organisers, designers, marketers”

From park shapers to PR gurus, we sought out women who have made an impact on snowboarding. We hear about weathering a severe storm whilst living in a van with a newborn daughter from Northwave and Drake Team Manager Chiara Grisorio, we talk rehabbing serious injury with FWT champ Manuela Mandl and we learn about launching and running a successful business from Lauren Lidford.

“Do what you want to do and fuck what people think of it.”

From all of us to you, we hope you enjoy engaging with this series as much as we enjoyed making it. And remember, it’s snowboarding- it’s meant to be fun. As Laax’s finest Hrund Hanna Thor says “Do what you want to do and fuck what people think of it.”
