One of the all-time classics, not just in the Burton line, but in general, the Custom is a bona fide institution in snowboarding. It may not have a funky shape or an ostentatious graphic like others on the market, but there’s something about a Custom that brings hordes of ardent followers back season after season. Over the last 20 years it’s seen subtle upgrades to keep it at the forefront, but at its core it’s still the super versatile all-mountain deck that blew minds back in the day.

Who Is The Burton Custom For?

You’re an intermediate and up rider who knows what they want and doesn’t want to pigeon-hole their style. You’re happy to rip a bit of anything and you’ll base your day on the hill around where conditions are best. Those looking for a looser, surfier feel might prefer the Flying V option, and the camber might appeal to those looking to charge hard and fast.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

Like many all-mountain snowboards, the Custom runs with a twin outline, but its 12.5mm setback shifts your weight down towards the tail offering more float in the deep snow and stability on hardpack. There’s no taper to speak of though, and the flex is that of a twin, so while there’s a little more nose than tail, there’s nothing to stop you hitting switch laps or landings when you’re throwing down in the park.

As for the profile, Burton kindly offer you a choice. Classic camber is the more powerful and aggressive option, whilst Flying V has a slightly more mellow vibe that’ll float easier in deeper snow. The choice is yours, are you a charger or a surfer?

“While it may not be as turbocharged as the Custom X, the Custom has more than enough juice to justify its semi-mythical status”

Construction and Materials

While it may not be as turbocharged as the Custom X, the Custom has more than enough juice to justify its semi-mythical status. Internally Burton have used their SuperFly 700G core, Duaizone EGD and Squeezebox technology to cut precious grams while still retaining maximum power.

Inlaid carbon additives deliver an ultra-responsive torsional feel, allowing you to manipulate the Custom underfoot and really drive power to your edges, which Burton have kitted out with their Frostbite technology for added bite and grip through the arc of your turns.

Burton’s channel system makes it super easy to adjust your bindings, slide ‘em all the way back when it’s been puking and you’ve got a ready-made powder board, especially if you choose the Flying V option with its rockered nose.

“With a traditional full camber option and Burton’s own Flying V hybrid rocker, plus a stonking range of sizes all the way up to 170 Wide, the Custom appeals to a huge range of riders”

Roundup

With a traditional full camber option and Burton’s own Flying V hybrid rocker, plus a stonking range of sizes all the way up to 170 Wide, the Custom appeals to a huge range of riders. It’s been Burton’s flagship snowboard for the past two decades, and it’s not hard to see why, up and comers and seasoned vets alike can find a dependable playmate with the Custom.

The Custom may be Burton’s most famous snowboard, but it’s by no means their magnum opus, the Custom X takes the core principles of its little sibling and augments every detail. That’s not to say the Custom is run of the mill, but those looking for the true high-end experience and are happy to splash a bit more cash- be sure to check out the X.
