For many years the Greats was instantly recognisable for its graphics featuring global icons like JFK, Marilyn Monroe and Tupac. This year’s version brings a dark twist, with not the greatest of mankind but the greatest of man-made threats to the planet depicted on the each topsheet: deforestation, fossil fuels, consumerism, animal cruelty and overfishing. Thankfully the ride is as fun as ever – and it’s now available to more snowboarders with the introduction of a pint-sized 149.

Who Is The YES. Greats UnInc For?

Riders who love their freestyle but appreciate the art of turning will dig the edge control on offer from this asymmetrical modern classic.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

Asymmetrical twins can look confusing but the principle is simple: a tighter sidecut on the heel edge means you can hold a carve equally well on either side. YES have taken it a step further here with the introduction of Asymmetrical MidBite – a funky version of their banging edge tech. The sidecut is still pinched in the midsection on both sides of the board, but the trademark ‘bite’ is shorter and deeper on the heelside. The result is it switches edge as quickly as a narrower board, and you can generate insane drive on the heelside without having to work super hard.

If all that sounds like a description of a carving board, well… it kinda is. It just so happens to be equally happy riding switch, so you can dial in those cab takeoffs and stomp the crap out of 1’s, 5’s and (if you’ve got the chops) 9’s like never before. The Greats’ aggressive elements are mellowed out by a camrock profile that’s less likely to initiate an unexpected scorpion on the landing.

Construction and Materials

The Greats UnInc combines three woods in the core – poplar, paulownia and bamboo – for the ultimate blend of strength, light weight and pop. The layup features both carbon fibre and triax glassing which means the board reacts instantly to your input and remains stable at speed. It’s not the most forgiving of decks but that’s not the idea here; this model is aimed squarely at experienced freestyle riders who know how to harness a stiffer flex. A rapid sintered base provides the icing on the cake. Actually copious amounts of resin probably provides the icing, but you catch our drift.

“Just like those thought-provoking graphics, we’re left with one question: are you up to the challenge?”

Roundup

Having re-appropriated the legendary UnInc tagline, this board has a lot to live up to. In truth the technology YES. have got going on these days is lightyears better than those old boards. Park-focused decks aren’t supposed to carve this well, but thanks to its asymmetric shape and that magical asym MidBite sidecut, the Greats UnInc boasts enough grip to lay down high speed turns on the coldest of mornings as well as deliver precise control on icy transitions. Just like those thought-provoking graphics, we’re left with one question: are you up to the challenge?
