Snowboard Goggles and Helmets 2019-2020 Preview – ISPO 2019

Snowboard Goggles and Helmets @ ISPO 2019

Protecting your noggin and peepers has never looked so good. Gone are the days of helmets just being for egg-head jerrys and kids, it’s cool to be safe. And you’re shit-out-of-luck if you think that your goggles are going to stop you having fun on a flat light day. Clarity, contrast, and anti-fog technologies are par for the course, and you can spec up further with battery powered changing lens tints, easy swap-out interfaces from your blackout to persimmon lens, or even change up the straps up if it doesn’t quite match your jacket anymore. Easy.

Helmets are safer and lighter than we’ve seen in previous years, too, with an updated MIPS system featured on many models, and a bunch of colour-ways, designs and collab options to choose from.

Dragon 2019/20

Dragon continues to live up to its reputation as the heavy-hitting goggle brand with something for everyone. For next season, the light adapting Lumalens will now be available for every lens in every colour, in every model.

All the classic goggle models like the X1, X1S, X2, X2S and NFX will still be available. Also PXV, this years’ newcomer, will be back, accompanied by the DX3, which is a cheaper model of the PXV goggles.

On another note, from now on Maria Kuzma will be seen wearing Dragon goggles while riding in the Freeride World Tour, as she has just been welcomed as a new member to the Dragon team. Maybe we can expect some collab from this new relationship in 20/21…

Giro 2019/20

Giro who first entered the world as a cycling brand is now very well established in the snowboarding scene as well with both their helmets and goggles. Detail wise our absolute favourite helmet from Giro this year is the Emerge Mips, that comes conveniently with a little stash pocket in its back. What’s new for this year then? The old but gold Jackson helmet has had polartec padding added to it and is literally the lightest helmet we’ve ever laid our hands on. It’s basically a combination of a ski and snowboarding helmet according to its looks, but definitely snowboardy enough for us to wear. This specific helmet also collaborates with POW, Protect Our Winters, another great collab for this season.

As for snowboard goggles, the Vivid by Zeiss lens is still one of our favourite lenses out there. The women’s Giro Ella goggles made it to our Whitelines 100 last year exactly for this reason. New for this year are the Method goggles, which are basically a combination of the cheaper Blok and more expensive Axis goggles.

Oakley 2019/20

Oakley Prizm lens, the lens that allows for enhanced contrast and visibility. So far we’ve had the opportunity to enjoy these lenses for various weather conditions, bright sun, cloudy and snowy. Well guess what, now there is a new Prizm lens that covers all of these three conditions. The Prizm React Torch Iridum lens offers us lazy snowboarders a way to shred all day, in all conditions, without having to worry about changing the goggle lens. You’ll only need to press a button and the lens goes from medium to dark, or to light. And the button is glove friendly too, boom!

This lens will first be featured in the new Oakley Fall Line XL goggles.

Smith 2019/20

Smith, a goggle brand invented by an original ski bum who goes by the name Bob Smith. This brand has been around for more than 50 years. They’ve always been a pioneer in both the goggle and helmet market, famous for everything from their anti-fog capacity and their ChromaPop lens that filters specific wavelengths of light that cause colour confusion (green & blue, and green & red).

For everyone who loves their I/O line, but can’t really get it to fit their head size, we’ve got great news for you! Smith will launch a XL and S version of these goggles for the next season. The newcomer for this year is the 4D Mag goggle with a fisheye lens that allows for a wider vision range.
