Jones Snowboards | 2021-22 Gear Preview

As part of our new Envision Series, we take a first look at the next season's new products from Jones Snowboards

Welcome to our new Envision Series where we’ll be bringing you the latest gear previews from some of the most exciting new snowboard, boot, binding, outerwear and goggle products to drop for winter 2021-22. In our first Envision episode, we’re taking a look at next year’s lineup from Jones Snowboards.

In normal times, February is the month when the Whitelines team are somewhere up a mountain or deep in a conference hall getting our hands on all of the new snowboard gear to come for next year. Not gonna lie, trade show season is definitely one of the sweeter perks of the job, but with the widespread resort closures and cancellations of on-snow test events, we’ve decided to mix things up for this winter.

Despite the global challenges faced over the last 12 months, Jones Snowboards have been positioned better than most to adapt to the increased demand for splitboarding and backcountry equipment as more riders than ever took to earning their turns out on the skin track. Even so, while the rise in splitboarding’s popularity shows no signs of fading, next year will (fingers crossed) bring a return to resort riding once again.

“In our first Envision episode of the year, we’re taking a look at next year’s lineup from Jones Snowboards”

With that in mind, we wanted to take a closer look at three new solid snowboards – the Aviator 2.0, the Storm Wolf, and the women’s Stratos – as well as the upgraded Mercury bindings. All four products come from the continued evolution of pre-existing fan favourites in their line, but with some exciting new tweaks and state of the art technology.

Check out our product preview on the new Jones snowboard gear for 2021/22 below, as well as our interview with Jones Global Marketing Manager, Seth Lightcap.

What’s your hero story going forward into the 2021/22 season?
Seth Lightcap: For 21/22, we are excited to debut four new board models and one new binding model. Two of the new board models are Surf series models, the Storm Wolf and the Mind Expander Twin.

The new Storm Wolf is a high powered swallowtail that blends the all-mountain versatility of a directional freeride board with signature Surf Series turn performance. Surfboard shaper Chris Christenson and Jeremy Jones designed this new model by combining the shape and profile of the Storm Chaser and Lone Wolf, hence the name.

The Storm Wolf features a Christenson Surf CAMBER profile, long sidecut, mid-stiff flex, 3D Contour Base 3.0 and Traction Tech 3.5 edges. The Surf Camber profile, long sidecut and Traction Tech edges keep you locked in railing turns at speed while the 3D Contour Base and tapered swallowtail shape help you break loose slashing gullies and transitions. To absorb chatter and punch through rough snow patches, the Storm Wolf construction includes Carbon/Innegra reinforcement and an ECO-Plastic topsheet.

The new Mind Expander Twin is a hybrid Surf Series model that blends the playful, easygoing board feel of the Mind Expander with the freestyle performance of a directional twin shape.

The Mind Expander Twin’s fun-loving personality is defined by it’s friendly flex, tight sidecut, Christenson Surf CAMBER profile and 3D Contour Base 3.0. The blunted, twin shape and 3D Contour Base make riding switch and buttering pow extra easy while the narrow sidecut and Surf Camber profile offer snappy turn response.

For a damp ride and confident edge control on chop or ice, the Mind Expander Twin also features Flax/Basalt Stringers and Traction Tech 3.5 edges. Riders who live to bounce down the mountain hitting every terrain feature in sight will love this new alternative freestyle board.

The other two new board models are Aviator 2.0 and the Women’s Stratos.

The completely re-designed Aviator 2.0 is a hard charging directional twin built for expert all-mountain riders who like to rail turns and stomp airs anywhere on the mountain. This new edition of the Aviator was designed in collaboration with Jones team riders Victor de la Rue and Jimmy Goodman.

What sets the Aviator apart is its TRUE CAMBER profile and its unique wood core that features Koroyd in the nose. Victor and Jimmy swear by the power of full camber for edging on steeps and landing tricks on the tail. Koroyd is an ultra light dampening material that sucks up chatter and offers a super damp board feel. It’s 75% lighter than wood so by placing it in the nose of the board it decreases the spin weight.

The Aviator 2.0 also features a 3D Contour Base 2.0, Triax Fiberglass, Carbon/Innegra Reinforcement, an ECO-Plastic topsheet and Traction Tech 3.5 edges. The 3D Contour Base starts after the contact point and helps eliminate edge catch and improve turn fluidity while the Triax fiberglass and Carbon Innegra layer under the Eco- Plastic topsheet suck up board chatter and offer supreme pop and lightning fast response to your every movement.

The big news in the Jones binding line is that we have a new model – the Meteorite! The Meteorite binding is designed for the all-mountain rider that wants a stable and comfortable binding with a tweak-able medium-soft flex. It features NOW Skate Tech technology for insane power transfer and a new Dynamic Flex highback that is stiff in the center for solid support and softer on the sides for friendly manoeuvrability.

The Meteorite can be set up in Surf mode or Freeride mode by switching bushing and swapping the Flip-It ankle straps. Surf mode offers maximum tweak-ability, Freeride mode offers maximum response. To keep your boots locked in with no strap bite, the Meteorite features our stitched Flip-It Mid-Wide Straps that have a 3D-injected core for solid support and a foam wrap for even pressure distribution and lateral flexibility.

Our two existing binding models, the Apollo and Mercury, are also significantly upgraded for 21/22. Both models feature a new Hanger, new ankle straps and new Flex Hinge strap attachments. The Hanger 3.0 has a wider bushing footprint for enhanced board connection, faster energy transfer and better high volume boot fit.

Our new two-part, molded Power Spine Ankle Straps have a wide bottom section that’s softer for enhanced comfort and a stiff center spine for ultimate response. New Hinge Connectors keep your ankle strap out of the way when you step in to strap in, and new Curved Ladders make it easy to line up the buckle and quickly ratchet down.

What product are you personally most stoked on?
I’ll be riding the new Aviator 2.0 in the spring when the terrain park is firing! Also stoked to rip the Storm Wolf on some deeeep days.

What new tech and materials can we look forward to seeing for 2021/22?
Our biggest tech addition is Koroyd in the wood core of the new Aviator 2.0. Koroyd is an ultra light dampening material that sucks up chatter and offers a super damp board feel. It’s 75% lighter than wood so by placing it in the nose of the board it decreases the spin weight.

Have you made any specific changes or leaps within your women’s range?
We are excited to debut the Women’s Stratos. The Women’s Stratos is a hybrid all-mountain board built with the body of a directional freeride board and the spirit of a freestyle board.

It has a playful board feel thanks to a tight sidecut and friendly flex, but the 10mm of taper and 3D Contour Base 3.0 give it the float and turn performance of a pow board. The directional rocker profile and Traction Tech 3.0 keep the Stratos locked on edge accelerating into carves and the textured Eco-plastic topsheet and Basalt stringers add torsional response and reduce board chatter in rough terrain.

Where are we seeing innovation within your existing line?
We’ve made our Hovercraft line more sustainable by eliminating all ink markings on the topsheet, base and sidewalls. We use a die-cut base and all markings on the topsheet are engraved with a laser.

Is there an overall theme or inspiration driving your 21/22 line?
We will continue to feature artwork from renowned graphic artists on eight of our solid models – Mountain Twin, Twin Sister, Ultra Mountain Twin, Ultracraft, Frontier, Dream Catcher, Aviator 2.0 and Airheart.

The visual theme for the rest of our line will also remain the same – wood veneers for the Flagship and Hovercraft line, plus tie-dye for the Surf Series. The new Aviator 2.0 features graphics from our long time artistic collaborator, RP Roberts.

Have any team riders been involved in the R&D process? Where have you been putting these new/improved models to the test?
Jeremy Jones and the Jones team test all the new shapes in Lake Tahoe where Jeremy lives.

Covid has shaken up everything this year. Are there any big changes taking place with you guys ahead of next season?
COVID-19 has affected our line in that we are carrying over more models than previously planned. This decision was made out of support for our dealers who will face another very challenging retail season again this winter.

Where can we see updates or changes within the company, not product related?
Check out the team page on our website

Do you have any new sustainability stories for next season? Has
any of your production moved to become more sustainable?

We are very excited to announce the results of our LCA analysis that we recently completed for our snowboards and splitboards. This report will debut in Spring 2021 and will detail the approximate carbon footprint of our production from sourcing materials to the transport of the finished gear to the shops. In addition to the LCA report we will also promote our switch to 100% solar power for our production.
