Why We Chose The Dragon RVX MAG OTG Goggles: A major player in the goggle game takes its long-anticipated step into the magnetic field.

‘Magnetic goggles’ was, for a long time, on every snowboarder’s fantasy wishlist – but for the best part of the last decade, it’s been a reality. Amazingly, eyewear behemoth Dragon hadn’t yet taken the plunge, relying instead on its quick-release ‘Swiftlock’ lens change system.

“When it comes to lens tech, you’re in safe hands with Dragon”

The crew were apparently waiting until they’d nailed it before launching a system of their own – and from the look of the Dragon RVX MAG OTG (no, that’s not a wifi password), the wait has been worth it.

Who Are the Dragon RVX MAG OTG Goggles For?

Dragon has garnered a legion of fans thanks to its consistent quality across multiple sports, and we have no doubt they’ll be frothing at what is now the daddy of the Dragon range. Thanks to notches in the face foam, these are also ideal for those who sport a set of Gregory Pecks on the mountain (OTG = Over The Glasses).

Lens

When it comes to lens tech, you’re in safe hands with Dragon. Its ‘Lumalens’ high-performance option came along in the first wave of ‘enhanced’ lens tech, and remains one of the best in the business. Like most of its ilk it promises (and delivers) increased clarity and popping colours, with minimised eye fatigue.

The lens on the Dragon RVX MAG OTG is double-layered, with the resultant gap creating a barrier between the warmth of your face and the chill of the mountain air (thus eliminating the main cause of fogging). In a belt ‘n’ braces approach, the inner lens also features an anti-fog coating.

The lenses are also all injection-moulded, always coming out exactly as intended to the finest detail. They taper out to the sides, too; without this trick, you’d be likely to experience a distoritive effect that can knacker out your eyeballs (yes, really).

Frame and Straps

The frame on the RVX MAG OTG is the standard (and classic) polyurethane offering seen on most Dragon goggles in recent years. It’s light, can withstand extreme cold, and you’d have a better chance of breaking into Fort Knox than breaking this. New for this year, obviously, are the magnetic anchors that snap the lens in place. As an extra precaution, the Swiftlock lever system has been retained on one side, making these fully ragdoll-proof.

The RVX MAG OTG also features Dragon’s signature ‘armoured’ vents along the top of the frame. The chunky plastic sieve-like structure has stayed the course even as other brands opt for more discreet (but often less effective) designs. Much like Lumalens, this system has proven its worth over time.

One thing we’ve always loved about Dragon goggles is the range of signature straps designed for the stacked pro team. Only skier Jossi Wells gets the honour for the RXV MAG OTG, but he’s actually pretty rad on a board so it’s all good…

Roundup

For our money, Dragon has always been a safe pair of hands. From year to year the models and tech barely fluctuate, which is a sign of a solid foundation that was already ahead of its time when it first appeared.

Still, it’s great to see this (possibly overdue) embrace of new ideas, especially as it’s been done so well. If you’ve felt let down by the mag-hype, the Dragon RVX MAG OTG is your excuse to give it another go.

Pros:

  • Goggles don’t get much more dependable than this – even when there’s new tech on display
  • No fewer than fifteen lens tints from which to choose

Cons:

  • These sit a little further from your face than some competitors
  • Dragon’s photochromic lenses (the ones that adjust the tint automatically to match the conditions) haven’t ported over to this model just yet

“Dragon’s first foray into the magnetic lens changing system and we’ve nailed it. Using our latest proven model the RVX with Over The Glass capabilities, it’s been updated for 22 with magnets for swift, easy lens changing. The Swiftlock 2.0 also makes sure it stays securely in place, meaning no escaping lens after a hard slam… you’ve all been there :)”
