The simplicity of snowboarding

Hitting that sweet spot again and again – Antti Autti and his crew have gone and dropped another drop of gold for the soul. After last year’s success saga, CLOSER, which got us shivering to our bones, YUKIGUNI too takes an ingeniously genuine spin on the simplicity of snowboarding.

This year the crew head out to Minamiuonuma City in Japan, which is not far from Tokyo. It’s a place that’s stayed under the radar, hence it isn’t tracked out by 10am. The calmness of the place is well reflected in the clip too, making us think we should head here for our next powder fix.

Yukiguni can be directly translated into “Snow Country”. However, it refers to ‘areas in Japan characterized by heavy, long-lasting snowfalls’ (Wikipedia) – a solid choice for a destination if your sole aim is to shred pow.

“I have a strong connection to Minamiuonuma. This year we got an opportunity from local guide and city counsellor Takumi Nagai who wanted us to come create an edit in his home turf. It was definitely one of the most challenging yet rewarding filming trips in Japan for us. In Minamiuonuma it snows more than any other place I’ve ever been and the snow has this moist texture on it. It feels heavy at times and since we make a lot of follow cams and other moving camera angles this created a lot of challenges. In the end, though, it was exactly this unique feeling of snowfall that created the unique vibe in this film. If you want to ride great powder and no crowds in Japan, then this is the place!” – Antti Autti.

Everything about this clip is spot on. The soulful snowboarding, the soothing edit and the calm music. The minimalism of YUKIGUNI reminds us that we don’t need much to feel the joys of snowboarding – simply a board and snow is enough.
