Why we chose the YES. Basic UnInc RDM Snowboard: A nostalgia fuelled throwback snowboard combined the best in modern-day tech and materials have resulted in one of our favourite all-mountain freestyle snowboards ever.

Since 2008, the boys over at YES. Snowboards have been shaking the tree with some of the most progressive, innovative and creative snowboards out there. But long before then, they were shaping the culture of snowboarding and pushing progression to its limits with the UnInc Crew

This season they’re treating us to something pretty special: a limited run of some of their bestselling models reimagined and redesigned with the most premium tech and materials, all while paying tribute to snowboarding’s glory years of the UnInc era.

Romain De Marchi’s re-imagined Basic UnInc is the most versatile, all-mountain focussed of the series and is a pretty serious step up from the long-standing best seller.

Who Is The YES. Basic UnInc RDM For?

Make no mistake, it’s a bit of a boss-hog. Rider’s will need to be fairly confident and experienced to take full advantage of what’s on offer with the Basic UnInc. But if you’ve been looking for a powerful twin snowboard to level up your all-mountain freestyle this season then surely this is one of the best tools for the job.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

It has the same true twin outline as the Basic, but that’s about where the similarities end. The Basic UnInc opts for a more powerful, fully positive camber. While this makes it a little less forgiving and playful around the contact points, you get the payoff of an incredibly responsive, dynamic and explosive feel underfoot.

There’s also the addition of the Slamback Inserts. Now, nobody out there will pretend that a true twin, camber profiled snowboard is the preffered option for floating in deep conditions, but enabling the rider to position their bindings further back on the board’s running length will increase the surface area in the nose and give you substantially better float than you’d ever expect from this kind of shape.

But perhaps the jewel in the crown lays is in YES.’ UnderBite Technology. Even at a glance, you’ll see how the sidecut pulls in quite drastically around the insert packs. This unique design increases the precision on the edge by more effectively distributing the pressure into three sections of the sidecut (nose, mid-body and tail) as you ride through a turn and allows you to feel the board working along its radius more effectively.

Construction and Materials

Compared with the original Basic, Romain’s UnInc version dials the flex from a 5/10 up to a 7/10. We found it to be a pretty big step up in the board’s overall response, but not so much that you can’t still bring more creative elements of flatland and freestyle to your riding.

As well as poplar running throughout the core, the Basic UnInc also benefits from the lightweight pop of paulownia and bamboo stringers. The fibreglass layers have also been stiffened up, opting for a tri-ax configuration, which adds more torsional rigidity to the board and provides it with some added stability at speed.

Speaking of which, we really noticed just how much faster this thing was compared with the original Basic. The base has been upgraded from extruded to sintered and tidies off a pretty impressive package.

Roundup

Even with the original Basic, the name arguably did a disservice to how much performance and versatility was on offer for such a modest price point, but Roman’s limited run of the best-seller really does step up every single component by several levels. Who knows if the UnInc version will become a permanent fixture in the lineup (we certainly hope so), but we wouldn’t advise taking that chance. Get this thing under your feet while you can.

Trade Secrets

David Pitschi – Brand Manager, YES. Snowboards

“Like all the boards there is the foreverflex process. But for the Romain board, we made the camber slightly higher than the other boards so that it had the extra pop.”
