There’s powder and then there’s powder, you know what we’re talking about and it’s not 2cm of tracked snow on the side of the piste. We’re talking about the nipple deep champagne stuff that keeps us up at night, the undulating powder fields in Japan, the faceshots galore on bluebird day. Ah, the good stuff.
That’s exactly the kind of thing you’ll be expecting when you strap into the Weston Japow. This is a pow hunting, freshie sniffing, snow cannon that’s built for the deepest days.

Who Is The Weston Japow For?

Park? What’s that? Never heard of it. Okay, so you might have a different board for freestyle, but you’re a rider who is fanatical about checking the snow forecast, you’ll drive hours just to get a taste of that sweet white gold. All in all, you froth over deep snow and you’re experienced enough to make the most of this tall drink of water.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The shape alone could keep this floating effortlessly, the big fat rockered nose, the reduced surface area in the swallowtail to sink it down, the wide surface area and setback stance do the heavy lifting when the snows been falling relentlessly.

But also this same shape means you’re not gonna be riding park with this badboy. This is for deep days. And actually, in fairness, the not so deep days as well. Okay I know we hyped up the powder here already, but the Japow also rips on groomers. Think laid out carves and digging big, fat trenches up on your edges.

With a mellow camber running between the contact points, you get a little extra life and aggression through the board. Then you’ve got the extra width to keep you from catching toes when you’re really digging into a Eurocarve. Add some spice from the shorter tail for slashing and you’ve got a veritable groomer slayer.

Construction and Materials

Swallowtail’s look awesome, and that’s just facts, but they do also have a tendency to look a little fragile. Weston have beefed up the Japow’s tail with carbon stringers running from the rear insert pack through each arm to inject some real life into the rear of the board. This’ll help with tail-heavy landings, and to keep you locked into your carves right up until the last second.

Weston have tricked out the Japow with their dual wood core, with bamboo to keep it snappy and lively and poplar to keep the weight down. This is sandwiched with reactive triax fibreglass and topped off with their slick Sintered base to keep you turning and burning all season long.

Roundup

This is where the lines between powder and freeride begin to separate. Obviously the Japow will be great for open powder fields, probably not so hot when it comes to threading needles through couloirs though. Realistically, unless you strike it lucky everytime, this probably isn’t going to be a snowboard for every day of the season. But the days you do get out on it? Those are the ones that you’ll remember.
