- Rockers?:
They say: The pro team’s ultimate freestyle weapon!
We say: Both the more frisky rocker and the more solid camber versions of the Squad are made for pissing about in the park. The original grip-taped Squad was the board that made Volkl cool, and it still rocks.
Tester says: Playful and powerful, it will kill the whole mountain.

About Volkl
- Building boards since: 1997
- HQ: Baar, Switzerland
- History lesson: Like many of the old-school ski brands on this list, Volkl was founded as a family business. Georg Volkl started building horse-drawn carts out of a workshop in Bavaria in 1875 and the company passed from father to son until 1992, when it was bought out by a Swiss company. In the early 90s, Volkl’s German factory built boards for the likes of Nitro, Sims and Santa Cruz, but it wasn’t until 1997 that they started making them under their own name.
- Ridden by: After years of being written off as a ski brand, Volkl has now officially become cool. Beloved by the kind of Austrian park rat who’ll throw a clean cab nine then wash it down with at least nine pints. And probably end up dancing on the tables to some god-awful oompa-beat trance.
