  • Rockers?:

They say: The ultimate backcountry freestyle performance.
We say: A rockered board with a tapered directional shape that makes pow riding a breeze. The tapered shape means you can still ride just about ride switch, but that’s not really going to be your top priority on this board.
Tester says: Sweet in powder, and holds an edge nicely on the piste too.

About Volkl

  • Building boards since: 1997
  • HQ: Baar, Switzerland
  • History lesson: Like many of the old-school ski brands on this list, Volkl was founded as a family business. Georg Volkl started building horse-drawn carts out of a workshop in Bavaria in 1875 and the company passed from father to son until 1992, when it was bought out by a Swiss company. In the early 90s, Volkl’s German factory built boards for the likes of Nitro, Sims and Santa Cruz, but it wasn’t until 1997 that they started making them under their own name.
  • Ridden by: After years of being written off as a ski brand, Volkl has now officially become cool. Beloved by the kind of Austrian park rat who’ll throw a clean cab nine then wash it down with at least nine pints. And probably end up dancing on the tables to some god-awful oompa-beat trance.
