Cheap trips series- Vogel, Slovenia. Our handy guide to Snowboarding on a budget.

We’d all love to spend more time on the snow, but we get it – we picked an expensive hobby. Prices for a week away can be astronomical and they’re just getting steeper each year. The Whitelines team is all for taking trips on a shoestring, and while we’re still hoping for an estranged great-uncle to come out of the woodwork and have left us a few million quid in his will, but until then, Snowboarding on a Budget will take a closer look at resorts for all of us who are ballin’ on a budget. For our first location we’ve chosen Vogel, Slovenia.

First up on our cheap trips series we’ve got Vogel ski resort, located in the Triglav National Park, just above the b-e-a-uuuuuutiful Lake Bohinj. You’d be forgiven if Slovenia isn’t the first place that springs to mind when you’re planning your next trip, but you’d be pretty silly to overlook Slovenia skiing or boarding completely. While it’s not the biggest resort out there, if you’re looking for value for money, Vogel should be steaming up your list. With a high season 5-day pass costing only 135 euros for an adult, it’s an absolute steal- that’s what you pay for 2 ham and cheese croissants in a Swiss resort…

There’s a bunch of different ways to get to Vogel- planes and trains and automobiles, I guess you could even walk if you were reeeeallly counting every penny. Slovenia is one of the cheapest countries to travel to from the UK, especially when flying. The nearest airport is Ljubljana, and you can easily get a return flight from London for under £70, especially if you’re flexible with dates. From the airport you can either hop on a bus for a few quid, or car hire is crazy cheap. We looked up a car hire from the airport and had quotes for around £100 for a 4 person motor for 7 days.

“Lift tickets in Vogel are dirt cheap as is”

Lift tickets in Vogel are dirt cheap as is, but they even offer several discounted passes for different groups. If you’re with an organised group of 10 or more, you get a special price, children under 6 go free, and you get further discounted price for seniors and youth. Families get a special deal as well, at this point, they’re basically giving lift passes away. The prices go down even further outside of high season, which is before 21st December or after 17th March. It’s also one of Eastern Europe’s most snowsure resorts, so you’re generally all good to plan a spring trip over to work on your hectic goggle tan.

With 22km of pistes, Vogel isn’t the worlds hugest resort, it might be more suited to the long weekend trip that you sneak in when Europe gets a last-minute flurry of snow. There’s a nice mix of gentle beginner slopes, and a few more gnarly sections, and it even boasts some impressive side country. It does, however, have one of the best parks in Slovenia, with a mix of kickers, rails and boxes there’s enough to have a good time messing around. It even has a beginner line, so if you’re looking to learn a bit of freestyle in a more relaxed environment, then it’s a perfect spot.

There are also opportunities to do some touring around Vogel, they have some nice splitboarding routes, there’s also a few dedicated cross country ski tracks and a popular mountain hut you can rent for overnight trips. Down in Bohinj there are lots more accommodation options, there’s a hostel which includes a free ski shuttle bus and free breakfast (TOP TIP: fill your pockets with cereal and boiled eggs for a free midday snack). There’s loads of Air BnB’s around the area as well, with prices as low as £30 for 4 people.

There isn’t a great deal of après to be had in Vogel, there is a hotel by the main cable car station to stop off for a midday beer but there are quite a few nice bars in the village. Or if you’re trying to stick to your low cost holiday, just grab some tinnies and make your own fun for a fraction of the cost. In terms of eating, obviously the budget option will be a supermarket special, but there are reasonably priced options for eating out in the local hotels.

“Vogel is a great option for a nice trip out the slopes without breaking the bank”

In short, Vogel is a great option for a nice trip out the slopes without breaking the bank, there’s enough variety to suit a mixed group of riders, and it’ll be probably one of the cheapest trips you’ll take. We reckon Vogel is the perfect resort for a family looking to take a trip that they won’t have to trade their first born to pay for, it’s mellow enough for a complete beginner, but it’s not so flat that an experienced rider is gonna be tearing their hair out in boredom. It’d also be a really good shout for a sneaky weekender with your crew, razzing around Slovenia, tearing up the slopes and getting up to your eyeballs in cheap Eastern European beer.
