If 2020/21 season taught us anything, it’s that the lifts don’t have to be turning to get some serious riding done. They may have been designed with riders like Travis Rice and Bryan Iguchi in mind, but don’t let that put you off, the Union Explorer’s are designed to handle everything from the mundane sidecountry to the most gnarly conditions and will take you anywhere you want to go.

Who Is The Union Explorer For?

You may be new to splitboarding or you may have been hitting the skin track for years, either way, if you’re looking at getting a pair of these, you must love the uphill as much as you love the down.

Baseplate

The Explorer’s SP2 Duraflex baseplate is injected with carbon to ensure it’s reactive as all hell, it’ll transfer energy both laterally and heel to toe with an even distribution. It’s meant to function like a regular baseplate, for you to enjoy the ride down just as much as you would with your classic bindings.

Thermoformed EVA foam sits under the baseplate acting both as cushioning and a vibration dampener, adding a little bit of comfort but mostly absorbing chatter from riding. Directly underfoot you’ve got non-stick EVA, helpful to stop the snow build up as you switch from walk to ride mode.

The Explorer’s move into tour mode using a spring-loaded pin system on the side of the baseplate, just one pin changes the mode and locks it into place. Easy peasy, no more frozen hands as you get yourself switched over

Straps and Highbacks

Union’s Exoframe 4.0 and TS 2.0 toe and ankle straps are deisgned to shed weight where possible, whilst still keeping your boots locked and loaded, whether you’re on the uphill slog or the downhill holler. The malleable honeycomb-esque patterns form round the contours of your boots for max security.

Weight is always important with splitboarding equipment, I mean you’ve gotta get it all uphill right? Union’s EXP2 Duraflex ST highback marries lightweight durability, with responsive flex for a split binding that rides heel to toe like your regular set.

Roundup

There is a crazy Forged Carbon Explorer as well, but that’s a little more ice-axe and crampon, middle of nowhere kind of deal. Okay, so even these don’t come cheap, but when you factor in that you don’t need to buy a lift ticket then it all kind of evens out in the end. Happy trails!
