With all the press coverage of the Brazilian World Cup kicking off this week, we thought it was about time that we put together the Whitelines 2014 British snowboarders football team:
Leading from the back is the experienced and commanding James Stentiford (a sort of powder-loving Paulo Maldini) assisted by the two energetic wingbacks, Ollie Dutton and Angus Leith.
Keeping them on their toes is the giant Andy Nudds in goal, not the most mouthy of keepers but British snowboarding’s safest pair of hands.
The midfield is composed of the Olympic slopestyle team. Billy Morgan and Jamie Nicholls are as skillfill a centre-pairing as you could hope to find, giving the quick and agile Aimee Fuller and Jenny Jones the chance to send it up and down the flanks (goofy-footer Jones will start out deployed on the left but can easily – ahem – switch).
Jamie Trinder‘s ability to throw pretty much anything on any terrain makes him perfect for the attacking midfield role, keeping defenders guessing whilst providing a vital link between slopestyle and cutting-edge street riding – as personified by striker Will Smith. Will’s slight size comes as a particular advantage for nipping through the centre-backs in a Gary Lineker stylee.
Finishing off the on-pitch team is our number 10 Sparrow Knox, a wild card with the talent to produce entertainment and that X factor on the field. Whether it’s a ‘hand of God’ moment or something equally spectacular, he’ll be a memorable addition.
Of course no team would be complete without a coach, the incomparably competent Hamish McKnight. Everyone knows that Scottish managers are the best anyway.
Tim Warwood and Ed Leigh will be on hand to provide totally unbiased commentary, whilst Scott Penman’s talents make him the ideal candidate for team mascot.
