Why we chose the Switchback Smith Snowboard Bindings: They’re super versatile at a great price.

The Smith is built around the Aeron base, which is one of the most adjustable on the market. Built with the ability to physically change size, they’re bound to fit any and all boots with the precision we’re all yearning for.

“They also feature a Forged Alu heelcup and using an over moulding process they’ve created a cup which is virtually indestructible”

Forged Aluminium is the order of the day with the Smith bindings, firstly they have Forged Alu power rods to ensure you’re getting the ultimate edge to edge transfer. They also feature a Forged Alu heelcup. By using an over moulding process, Smith have created a cup which is virtually indestructible. For riders who like to bash and crash their way through the park, this little trick might just save your butt halfway through a heavy day.

They utilise a mini disk, to ensure less contact with the board so you’re left with a more consistent flex underfoot. They’re compatible with both inserts and the Channel system, so all good if you want to chop and change boards.

“A toe strap built to sit over the front of your boot keeps you locked into the binding without squashing over the top of your foot”

Eva foam pads work to soak up vibrations and chatter as you’re riding, they pair well with the dampening cushions situated in the four corners to keep you feeling comfy throughout the day.

Miller straps are soft and flexible, with no thick padding through them, not only does this save on weight but it allows the ankle strap to fit snug around your boot. A toe strap built to sit over the front of your boot keeps you locked into the binding without squashing over the top of your foot.

Midbacks sit lower round your leg and allow for a greater range of motion. They’ll allow you to bone and tweak better, and can be taken out with no tools if you wanted to go that one step further and ride ‘Nobacks’.

Tester’s Verdict

Corinne MayhewMayhew Snowboarding

“I didn’t even know I was wearing bindings while riding the Smiths. They’re so light and comfortable, yet supportive and durable that I really did feel like my feet were attached to the board by some kind of supernatural power (or maybe just by magic straps).

“The loose, surfy feel also allowed me to make the most of the slush and I feel this would be mirrored in heavy duty backcountry conditions”

I tested these bindings in slushy spring conditions paired with the Bataleon Push Up board, which made the perfect combo. While jibbing and surfing the pistes, I could easily achieve the desired amount of pop from this setup all the way down the mountain without losing any energy, which I feel was due to the perfect flex of the bindings.

The loose, surfy feel also allowed me to make the most of the slush and I feel this would be mirrored in heavy duty backcountry conditions, if given the opportunity. If you’re looking for supremely comfortable bindings that will still allow you to take full advantage of any conditions and make the most of the board you’re riding then the Smiths are the bindings for you.”
