Nothing in snowboarding – not a high-speed pow slash or stomping a pentacork – can come close to the sensory delights of slipping on a brand new pair of socks.
Ok, so we might have over-egged that a little but the fact remains that new socks are great; conversely, an old, mouldy pair are an assault on your senses, your comfort and those of your companions.
If this is the season when you retire a trusty old pair that have become like cardboard, have holes in them, or smell like the inside of a fake leg, the good news is there are many snowboard specific ones out there to cater for all manner of wallet size and even aesthetic preference.

As snowboarders we tend to ride with forward lean, and even if we don’t we’re still regularly bending at the ankles, so the most important thing to look for is that they’re built with this in mind – send the terrible tube ones your nan got you back: they will only bunch up and create uncomfortable pressure points. You have right- and left feet, too, so getting anatomical socks will also give you an advantage when it comes to comfort.
Manufacturers of a good pair of snowboard socks will know that combining thicker, more insulated and padded areas with thinner zones is the way to keep your feet sweet, some even using ribbed areas for heightened pleasure, or at least just keeping the warmth and padding where you need it.
And while most socks still are made of a mix of synthetic fibres and cotton, you can get ones using merino wool (lightweight, super warm and more resistant to kicking out a stench) for a few shekels more – a worthy investment for many.
