UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Salomon Trigger here

With its malleable heelcup, Salomon’s ‘Shadowfit’ technology has turned a few heads. If you’re not familiar with it, check out the Salomon District to see what it’s all about. The system has certainly won its fair share of fans, but even the makers of Shadowfit will admit that it’s perhaps not for everyone.

“Blaster Tech acts like dual shock absorbers, cancelling out some of the chatter than can lead to foot fatigue”

That’s why they continue to make models with conventional heelcups alongside the softer ones. The Salomon Trigger is one of these, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that it’s run-of-the-mill.

The key feature in the Salomon Trigger is the ‘Blaster’ tech – put simply, the sections of binding that join the baseplate to the heelcup are more flexible than the rest of the chassis, which is rigid. These act like dual shock absorbers, cancelling out some of the chatter than can lead to foot fatigue.

Blaster tech is applied differently to each binding that features it. The Trigger has a softer version that, on top of smoothing out day-to-day cruising, can also soak up more of the big impacts that you’ll expect to encounter in the park.

Also helping out on that front is the extra cushioning at the heel section of the footbed. If you’ve ever knuckled a monster jump, you’ll know that it’s often your heels that take the brunt of the impact, so anything that can minimise that is a welcome feature.

“The highback’s balance of tweakability and response has been improved further still, and some padding has been added to the inside”

One of the main updates for the 2017/18 Salomon Trigger is the new highback, unique to this model. The balance of tweakability and response has been improved further still, and some padding has been added to the inside. It’s only present towards the top of the highback, though, and there’s just enough to improve comfort without making the ride feel a bit soggy.

Thanks to the easy-adjust straps and efficient aluminium ratchets, you’re good to go in seconds. Both straps have a great build quality too, another feature that makes this a terrific binding for the price.

If you’re after something effective but not expensive, get your fingers on the Salomon Trigger.

Tester’s Verdict

Andrew Duthie – whitelines.com

“I’ve always loved Salomon boots, and their boards too, albeit to a lesser extent. However, for year I felt that their bindings were the weak link. Those days are well and truly over, though, thanks to great models like the Defender, the District, and this.

“This is a smooth-riding joy of a binding. I had zero foot pain, and no shortage of response”

The Salomon Trigger’s signature ‘Blaster’ Tech isn’t something I was fully conscious of during the ride, but that’s a good thing. For that to have been the case, the joint in question would probably have been flopping about like overcooked pasta.

No, the effect is subtle, and it’s hard to say exactly how much it does. It’s the end result that matters, though, and this is a smooth-riding joy of a binding. I had zero foot pain, and no shortage of response.

I didn’t come up short on any booters (for once) so can’t comment on the heel padding, but the overall feel of the footbed is excellent, and the straps are super comfy too. Salomon wins the ‘easiest to adjust on the fly’ prize, too.

The Trigger is a top choice for anyone wanting something more conventional than the soft-flexing ShadowFit binders, and it’s among the best value-for-money deals out there.”

Trade Secrets

Chris Grenier – Team Rider, Salomon

“I like this binding because its simple, looks good, and works phenomenally.

It’s got this dynamic suspension bushing making it really soft and really playful. It helps absorbs bumps when conditions are choppy, and the soft highback is perfect for tweaking.

Its a simple binding that works for everything I do.”
