UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2018/2019 Salomon Sick Stick here

The Salomon Sick Stick may be ten years old, but for 2017/18 it’s been fully refreshed by Austrian pow legend Wolle Nyvelt. It’s the backbone of Salomon’s new ‘Hillside Project’, a small collection of freeride shapes that also includes the First Call and Pillow Talk.

“The profile allows you to stay on top of deep snow whilst maintaining ollie power and edge bite”

You may have already noticed that the tail is different, but otherwise the tapered twin shape remains. Floating in the powder is easy, but it’s not so directional that you can’t cut loose on the natural features. The profile is slightly different this year, but it’s still essentially cambered with rocker at each end – a fine combination that allows you to stay on top of deep snow whilst maintaining ollie power and edge bite.

Speaking of which, the sidecut has been upgraded to the ‘Quadralizer’ version, which offers even better edge hold thanks to the combination of different radii. If it hasn’t snowed in weeks, you’ll still be able to have plenty of fun putting the Sick Stick to the test inbounds.

The construction of the Salomon Sick Stick features some of the brand’s top-shelf tech. The ‘Ghost Green Core’ is the lightest in the range thanks to a liberal use of specially-selected paulownia wood, but it still packs a punch when you want to load it up for take-off. The sintered base is also lightning quick.

“Each size of the Salomon Sick Stick is different in shape, and picking the right one has a lot more to do with your riding style than how tall you are”

The one seen here is the 157, but if you think you’d be better off with the 151 or the 162 then be aware that each size of the Salomon Sick Stick is different in shape, and picking the right one has a lot more to do with your riding style than how tall you are.

The waist width and sidecut vary quite a bit, to make them better suited for certain conditions. Our tester has more to say on that below – make sure you check out his thoughts before making your choice.

The Salomon Sick Stick is also ‘split ready’, so if you want to chop it down the middle and turn it into a splitboard, it will already be sealed against the elements.

Tester’s Verdict

Mike Brindley – whitelines.com

“I took the 151 version of the revamped Salomon Sick Stick out, and on the piste I was surprised as to how much it feels like a bigger board. I’d normally ride a 154-157, and despite its diminutive size the 151 was comparable when making turns. Bolstered by the relatively stiff flex and rock out camber profile, this is a pocket rocket for sure.

“Tree run hunters will no doubt find the short 151 perfect for quick turns”

In deep snow it took a bit more getting used to, but while you do have to sit back into things a little bit, you won’t find yourself struggling for float. Tree run hunters will no doubt find the short 151 perfect for quick turns and a sharp turning circle when you need it most, then there’s the bigger sizes for those who want to cut loose on an open field.”

Trade Secrets

Wolfgang Nyvelt – Team Rider, Salomon

“I was excited to shape and engineer the new Sick Stick, and thought it could be rad to have a little more of a quiver approach to the board sizes.

The whole Hillside Project has been awesome and gave us the chance to try a lot of different shapes, flexes, and sidecuts, it let us build a nice set of boards for all kinds of terrain.

The Sick Stick has always been a rad mix of a killer pow board that is still a sick freestyle board. We definitely kept that focus whilst spicing up the visible changes that are cool but also work better, like the wider tail shape.”

The Sick Stick originally made its name as a twin tip powder board, but this year's model does away with the mirror image shape in favour of this bat wing tail, improving performance in deep snow when going forwards.
The new Salomon Sick Stick is without doubt one of the most photogenic boards we've ever shot.
