Rome Mini Shred 2017-2018 Kids’ Snowboard Bindings Review

The Rome Mini Shred kid’s snowboard binding is sturdy enough for high speeds and as much air as young legs can muster, but at the same time it’s far from a brute. If your grom is still figuring out those pesky edge changes, it’ll suit them just as well as more experienced nippers.

“The design of the highback and the straps wouldn’t look out of place next to adult models”

The Rome Mini Shred is completely tool-free, so any adjustments (other than those concerning how the baseplate is mounted to the board, such as stance angles) don’t require a screwdriver.

The heelcup and highback are integrated for a simpler, lighter setup, but while the features in some kids bindings make them feel very much like they’re in the ‘training-wheels’ stage, this is one that they’ll barely notice.

The design of the highback and the straps wouldn’t look out of place next to adult models, and the whole chassis is reassuringly chunky without going over the top. Plus it’s all black, because not all kids want cartoons on their bindings.

The model of the Rome Mini Shred seen here covers UK sizes 1-5, but there’s also a smaller version for UK sizes 10-1. That one doesn’t have a toe strap, making it a bit more convenient for the very smallest shredders, but makes up for it with a chunkier ankle strap that connects to the front of the baseplate.

“The Mini Shred encourages the kind of fuss-free progression that will have kids begging for another trip to the mountains”

There’s also a matching board (check out our review of the Rome Mini Shred kids’ snowboard here), as well as a boot that uses a single Boa coiler to get your young charge to the slopes faster. If you’re needing the full setup, it’s an excellent package that’s worth considering.

Even if you’re not as militant about “keeping groms off skis” as Rome are, you’ve got to hand it to them – with the Rome Mini Shred, they’ve delivered a simple yet effective kid’s snowboard binding that encourages the kind of fuss-free progression that will have them begging you for another trip to the mountains.

Tester’s Verdict

Punki – Whitelines Grom Team

“I really like these – they work so well, and they’re nice and easy to get on and off.”

Dad’s Comments

“These bindings are really sweet. They’ve got solid straps and nice, buttery ratchets. There’s also a neat 2-screw system instead of the usual 4-screw one, which speeds up adjusting the bindings and getting them on and off (thank God). I’d definitely buy them for my kids.”
