Rome DOD 2021-2022 Snowboard Bindings Review

  • Price: £270 / €330 / $330
  • Sizes: S, M/L, L/XL
  • Flex: 6/10
  • Entry System: Classic

For a binding that sits a fair way down Rome’s range, the DOD (Do Or Die, geddit?) is a pretty powerful model. It’s built on their most responsive chassis, with solid components and a nice amount of cushioning. As all-rounders go, it’s a great value package.

Who Is The Rome DOD For?

All-mountain riders that are happy to save a few bucks but don’t want to scrimp on performance.

Baseplate

Rome offer two basic styles of baseplate: FullWrap and AsymWrap. While the AsymWrap removes one side to free up movement, the FullWrap chassis – as deployed on the DOD – features an aluminium heel hoop that continues down the full length of the binding on either side of the foot. More metal means more power: energy is directed from heel-to-toe (and back) super efficiently, and your foot enjoys more lateral support. That comes at the expense of tweakability, but if you like to feel fully ‘inside’ your binding then FullWrap is the way to go.

The baseplate can be adjusted forwards and backwards to fit your boot, and features padding both under your foot and under the binding itself to dispel any nasty vibes.

Straps and Highbacks

There’s more padding on the inside of the highback, which is made from 85% nylon and stiffened with 15% glass. It’s reasonably aggressive – capable of mixing it up in the backcountry as well as tackling icy transitions – but is designed to absorb chatter so it never feels bone-jarring. Heelside turns are initiated with precision.

The straps feature AuxTech on the toe, which expands cleverly around the end of your boot, and a bombproof UltraLight ankle strap which is a little more heavy duty but is clearly built to last; it’s made from injected EVA and is on the firm side of squishy. Unlike Rome’s higher-end bindings, there’s no Pivotmount so you can’t customise the position of the straps across your boot.

Roundup

Rome’s tagline for the DOD is “The Working Class Hero”. It sums them up nicely. These are a binding that are affordable enough for the masses, but which have many of the materials and technology you would expect to find in a more premium model. Why pay more?
