Why we chose the Rome Agent Snowboard: Quivers beware; there’s a killer on the loose. Streamline your board bag with this legendary all-rounder.

Aside from a recent absence, the Rome Agent has served discerning riders for years as a bona fide modern classic. If ‘brilliant, dependable all-mountain snowboards’ had ever been a category on Family Fortunes, the Agent could well have been the top answer.

Naturally it’s enjoyed a few upgrades over the years, and 2021/22 is no different – but if you’ve ever ridden (and loved) a Rome Agent in the past, you won’t be disappointed here.

“Pick this one up if you like jumping off and/or sliding on things, but aren’t particularly fussed where you do it.”

Who Is The Rome Agent For?

While we’re happy to accept this one’s declared status as an all-round daily driver, the Rome Agent sails so close to being a park board that only freestyle fans should really be sniffing around this one. Pick this one up if you like jumping off and/or sliding on things, but aren’t particularly fussed where you do it.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

As you might have gleaned from the above, the Rome Agent has a true twin shape that’s just as happy in both directions, and always ready to spin like a top. The profile is a combination of camber bend between the feet, and gentle rockered sections towards the nose and tail. As the ‘Fusion Camber’ name suggests, the different sections blend into one another seamlessly, and the whole package keeps the door open for any and all disciplines.

The camber section holds an edge well when you want to bomb the pistes, and also springs into action when it’s time to get airborne. Those rockered areas come in handy when you want to dial things back a bit and work on your butters and presses, with a welcome ‘Get Out Of Jail Free Card’ aspect when things don’t quite go to plan.

Construction and Materials

Like a lot of boards of its ilk, the Rome Agent has been designed with a decent amount of give. Twisting it through the waist is a doddle thanks to the 90-degree biax fibreglass, and the medium longitudinal flex allows for seat-of-the-pants spontaneity when you’re in amongst the sidehits. Ollies still pack a punch though, thanks to the carbon-enveloped bamboo rods in the nose and tail. These ‘Omega Hotrods’ were first introduced last year, and have gone down a storm.

The rest of the core is pure poplar. Not the cleverest configuration, perhaps, but definitely one of the most reliable. The lack of variation in the wood profile may seem like a missed opportunity in terms of weight saving, but it makes the Rome Agent damn near impossible to break, and keeps the cost down too. It’s also now got a sintered base, improving its straightline speed (provided you look after it, of course).

Roundup

An Agent of change? Not this one – and we couldn’t be happier. This is true all-mountain versatility done right, with a track record that speaks for itself. In a world where more fly-by-night models than ever are creeping into brands’ lines for a season or two, only to be replaced without warning, this stands out as a proven winner. If you’ve been burned in the past, here’s a safe-as-houses option that’s also properly fun to ride.

“Truly an agent of chaos, this board is a true twin designed to slip behind enemy lines and make short work of whatever it finds. Built with our Fusion Camber, the Agent is responsive enough for jump line but plenty pressable when it’s time to hit that down rail hidden in the parking lot. This year’s graphic is inspired by cryptic transmissions from the agents of chaos throughout the Syndicate.”
