Why we chose the Rome 390 Boss Snowboard Bindings: A powerhouse freestyle binding that doesn’t break the bank.
When it comes to freestyle, the number 390 tends to conjure up images of a textbook scorpion or heel edge catch straight into the blood wagon. In the case of Rome’s 2021 bindings range, however, the 390 Boss muscles its way in with the big boys and, frankly, shows most of them up. This is a powerhouse of a freestyle binding at a price that pales in comparison to much of the competition. As one of the mainstays and best sellers in Rome’s line, these bindings remain true to their park origins, though there are a few tweaks and redesigns to keep things fresh.
Starting with the redesigned and recalibrated Full Wrap Platform, this is Rome’s chassis for bindings built to send it. They provide maximum power and energy transfer in a rugged and durable construction. While the Asym Wrap Platform is often better suited for riders looking for a slightly looser, more surf-inspired ride, the FullWrap on the 390 Boss takes a zero-tolerance approach to anything less than 100%, full-throttle power.

The highbacks, too, have been overhauled this season. Now constructed from 100% nylon, they provide a tonne of freestyle focussed flex, meaning they’re ideal for tweaking, pressing and jibbing on without ever feeling like you’re being snapped back to centre too aggressively. That said, the 3D shape gets increasingly wider towards the top and contours the back of the rider’s leg, so there’s still ample lateral support if you’re looking for a helping hand when you’re riding on the limits of your range of movement.
Rather than bulking the straps out with unnecessary cushioning or jacking the price up with Rome’s Auxetic straps designs, the 390 Boss strips back to the bare essentials, whilst keeping freestyle riding in mind. The PureFlex ankle straps are minimally styled but with maximum coring to keep the weight incredibly light and still provide enough tweakability in them.
