Avalanche probes are much of a muchness, usually only differing slightly in length, weight (by way of materials used), and the presence or otherwise of a quick-assemble system. The PIEPS iProbe II, however, is a different beast, offering a level of safety tech that most don’t.

“The PIEPS iProbe II avalanche probe gives you both visual and audio cues that can help speed up a rescue”

Via the LED screen and speaker incorporated into its top handle, the PIEPS iProbe II avalanche probe gives you both visual and audio cues that can help speed up a rescue. When in use, the tip of the probe detects the signal from a buried rider’s avalanche transceiver, and relay the information to you via the handle.

Setup is easy, with a quick-draw system that gets you ready in seconds, and a prolonged beep from the speaker indicates that the PIEPS iProbe II is on and ready to receive. If you’ve already used your transceiver in Search mode to narrow down the burial site, this will help you find the exact location.

When within two metres of the buried rider’s transceiver, an intermittent beep lets you know that you’re in the right ballpark. Once you’re within a mere 50 centimetres, you will once again hear a continuous beep, and the LED confirms with blue lights that you’re right at the source of the signal – at which point it’s time to plant the PIEPS iProbe II in the snow, and start digging.

“In an environment where literally every second counts, the PIEPS iProbe II has the potential to make all the difference”

It turns off automatically when you fold it up, so there’s no danger of accidentally leaving it on and draining the battery. Should it eventually get low on juice, a prompt at startup will tell you (although it’s better to find that out before a trip, rather than during…).

Learning and practicing good probe technique is always going to be more valuable than having any electronic assistance, but if you’re already up to speed then the PIEPS iProbe II can speed up the process further still – and in an environment where literally every second counts, it has the potential to make all the difference.

Trade Secrets

Heinz Stocker – Marketing Manager, PIEPS

This electronic probe with an acoustic and visual hit indicator enables a faster companion rescue – up to 60% time saved in pinpointing and probing.

The probe is automatically switched on when deployed and tensioned, and automatically switched off when tension is removed. The hit indication is possible with every transmitting beacon (according to
standard EN300718).

More time can be saved through the automatic sleep-mode of PIEPS beacons
with iProbe support. When probing, a continuous signal and a steady light
indicate a “hit”. Even if the buried person isn’t struck with the probe, this is the starting signal for digging.

Now also available in 300cm-length version.
