Patagonia | Turn Of Mind

Why do we only see the valley of nature if it serves our needs?

A few weeks ago, Patagonia released ‘Turn of Mind’, a film charting their ambassador Nicolas Wolken’s journey through nature and an exploration of his mindfulness.

This film isn’t an action-packed snowboard extravaganza watching big names do big spins off big cliffs. Turn of Mind takes a different approach and instead looks at the psychology, philosophy and ecology of what it means to snowboard.

Turn of Mind highlights conversations between Nicolas and friends and on a deeper level, between them and the environment in which they find themselves in. It’s a holistic look at where we fit into it all, and an examination of why it’s so important for us to feel connected to both the landscape and each other. “If you think you are a part of all this, of course you want to protect all this”.

“This way doing the right thing becomes an act of compassion rather than a moral obligation”

It’s never been so important for us to fiercely protect the environment, and Wolken finds that splitboarding, especially the hike up, allows him to focus on this. “If I want to change, I need to look inside myself. To find that intimate connection we all share with this planet. This way doing the right thing becomes an act of compassion rather than a moral obligation.”

Nicolas Wolken grew up in the small town of Küblis in the Swiss Alps, the son of a keen skier and mountaineer. His father’s passions trickled down to Nicolas and he soon became enthralled with the idea of the mountains. As a young boy he was given a snowboard for Christmas and he hasn’t looked back since. A former racer, Wolken was well versed with life on the edge but his focus soon drifted towards freeriding and the backcountry.
