Why we chose the Patagonia Snowdrifter Bib Snowboard Pants: As good at tackling mother nature’s weather tantrums as they are at preserving her future.

After proving themselves as one of the bestsellers from last year’s line the Patagonia Snowdrifter Bibs are back for 20/21. Last season Patagonia took a huge step by cutting all the items from their shell line that didn’t live up to their sustainability standards – every product in the line now has to be made using recycled material and be Fair Trade Sewn.

Already proven to be one of the best backcountry-specific pants out there, the Snowdrifter bibs haven’t changed much for 20/21 (why change a winning formula). Offered in both a women’s and men’s specific fit, these 3L bibs are both lightweight and stretchy, making it easier to hike your way through the backcountry. You won’t feel like you’re carrying any extra weight whilst the stretchy material makes it easier for you to move around in (the fabric won’t put any restrictions on your movements).

Like the Snowdrifter jacket, Patagonia’s used the same 3-layer H2No Performance Standard protection for the pant. This means they cut the mustard when it comes to durability and waterproofness. The added protection, breathability and moisture-managing knit backer are a welcome plus – especially when you’re faced with some serious weather off the beaten path.

The Snowdrifter bib is ideal when Mother Nature throws a tantrum, but they’ve also been made with the utmost respect to her (something we like a lot). Instead of using virgin materials, Patagonia’s used 70% recycled fabric to produce the pants – resulting in a major drop in their total carbon footprint.

“Why not go up to using 100% recycled fabric,” you might ask. Well, Patagonia’s goal is to produce durable products that are able to take you through the roughest of weather whilst lasting for a long time and, quite frankly, some of the recycled material isn’t yet cut out for this. At least for now, anyway. It’s surely only a matter of time.

On top of all the tech, a full-coverage bib is one of your best bet when you’re looking to stay dry on the mountain. The suspenders also detach in the front, allowing for quick and easy entry – saving you some time when you’re trying to get dressed in a hurry for first lift. They’ve also got a drop-seat configuration with two-way sliders side zips – something which might come in handy when you’re needing to let out some fumes.

For the pocket lovers out there, we’ve got some very good news. The Snowdrifter has an optimal amount of pockets – three: not too many to forget where you’ve put your stuff, but enough to carry the essentials with you: two thigh cargo pockets and one large chest pocket with an inside loop, all three zippered. Perfection.

The concealed RECCO reflector is also a good bonus, and sometimes a must if you’re looking for a pair of pants to hike out into the wilderness with. Remember though, you’ll be needing a lot more than just a RECCO reflector when heading out to the backcountry. If you’re unsure how to prepare for that, have a look at our Best Backcountry Gear for 20/21.
