Patagonia

Our pick of this season's best Patagonia snowboard outerwear

The Patagonia brand was officially born in 1973, when founder Yvon Chouinard change the name of his outdoor equipment shop from Chouinard Equipment to Patagonia. The year after, Patagonia employees attend a city council meeting to protest the potential disruption to a popular surf break as a result of proposed development of the mouth of the Ventura River. This kind of activism would set the tone for the future of the company; one in which it’s not, as far as they’re concerned, just about being another apparel brand.

Ever since the start, Patagonia has been committed to using their company to change the way business is done. Along the way, they’ve hoped to influence customers and other businesses (and hopefully change the system along the way). Basically, if you’re after no-nonsense outerwear that’s also ethical, look no further. And don’t let the price tag put you off either: an expensive jacket that lasts five seasons  will work out cheaper than five that only last for one.

Additionally, a percentage of all sales profits go towards environmental campaigns. Since 1985 Patagonia has donated millions to domestic and international grassroots environmental groups. And as of 2022 100% of the company’s voting stock has been transferred to the Patagonia Purpose Trust, created to protect the company’s values. On top of this, 100% of the nonvoting stock has been given to the Holdfast Collective; a non-profit dedicated to fighting the environmental crisis and defending nature.

Known for documenting different environmental issues and changes, Patagonia’s managed to influence change with their film Vanishing Lines being a prime example. The film helped raise awareness about a planned development to join two glacier ski resorts together in Tyrol, Austria, a development that was later scrapped.

Patagonia Powder Town Outerwear 2022-2023

Price: £320 Shell Jacket, £360 Insulated Jacket

Patagonia has a solid reputation in the industry as a top quality and high-tech brand who produce some of the finest gear for skiing and snowboarding. And while over the last few years they’ve been adopted by the fashionable youth as a trendy lifestyle brand, Patagonia will first and foremost always be for outdoor enthusiasts. Those people, in other words, who crave adventure and care for the planet.

New for this season, the Powder Town Jacket and Pants are continuing to consolidate Patagonia’s legacy as a purveyor of premium outerwear. Coming in both men’s and women’s sizes, in shell or insulated options and with the choice of bib or regular fit pant style, this is a set that caters to resort riders who appreciate quality but don’t want it coming at the expense of Mother Nature.

Who Is The Patagonia Powder Town Outerwear For?

We’d put this set more in the all-mountain category. Go for a sidecountry session in it, sure, and ride the resort while looking damn good at the same time.

Patagonia SnowDrifter Outerwear 2022-2023

Price: Jacket £380 / Pants £350

Patagonia climbed the rankings in many riders’ estimations this year, when owner Yvon Chounaird gave 98% of the company’s shares to fighting climate change. As proven over the decades, Patagonia’s outerwear is no less environmentally aware. The SnowDrifter jacket and bib pants are lightweight and stretchy, made from 70 per cent recycled materials, using Fair Trade factories. However, they don’t compromise on quality. The durable, high-performance shell is built to withstand howling winds and battering snowstorms. Ideal for backcountry pow hunters who want kit that’ll keep them cool on the uphills and warm whilst shredding down. Yes, it’s expensive, but this gear will last you years.

Patagonia Heavyweight Merino Socks 2022-2023

Price: £32

For a lot of riders, especially those starting out, socks can be an afterthought. ‘Some old hiking ones will do’, they might say to themselves as they look to commit that cash elsewhere.

Take it from us; this is a rookie error. When you take a moment to consider what your feet actually go through over an average day in the mountains, you might be more inclined to invest in some premium toe-clothes after all. That’s why we recommend turning to the brands that go big on quality – of which Patagonia, with its built-to-last approach and fondness for merino wool, definitely is one.

Who Are The Patagonia Heavyweight Merino Socks For?

Because of the relative warmth these offer, we’d recommend them to anyone expecting to tackle seriously cold temperatures. Your toes will thank you – and given merino’s incredible antimicrobial properties that banish boot-stink, so will your fellow travellers.
