Who Are The Oakley Sage Kotsenburg TC Earth Shell Jacket and Pants For?

Purposely designed for playing in the snow, the TC Earth Shell outerwear doesn’t just give you great cover from the elements but has also been designed with respect to mother earth using Oakley’s biodegradable bio-earth construction. This is the ideal outfit for the environmentally conscious rider who loves cruising through a forest full of fresh snow.

Materials and Construction

Oakley’s well-known reputation for producing some of the best snow goggles on the market is recognised in their outerwear too. The Bio-Earth face fabric, used for both the pants and the jacket, is Oakely’s “comprehensive solution aiming to reduce the environmental impact of textile product”. They’ve basically made the fabric biodegradable, meaning it’ll degrade into metabolic products of microorganisms such as H2O, CO2, CH4, and biomass.

Continuing on their path of innovation, Oakley’s also used a hydro-free DWR treatment for an added layer of waterproofing on both the 2-layer jacket and pants, which already offer a 20K waterproof rating, to begin with.

The Durable Water Repellent coating prevents the outer fabric from picking up water on its surface to avoid a clammy cold feeling, that comes with wet fabric. Like other textile brands, Oakley too has eliminated PFCs of Environmental Concern (PFCEC 1, commonly used in DWR treatments before) from the life cycle of their products

Fit and Features

Designed with a regular fit, both the jacket and the pants are made to sit comfortably around you without putting any restraint on your movements whilst still being fitted enough to not let your performance be affected by the “non-fitted” fit.

Stacked with plenty of features too, the jacket comes equipped with an adjustable helmet-compatible hood, waterproof zips, a chest pocket, an RFID pass pocket, hidden side hand pockets, and a pocket to store your goggles and a bunch of other features. For added style points, the jacket’s also got an ellipse logo sitting on the hood and the left chest, whilst you can find the Oakley logo on the back shoulder.

The pants feature a buttoned waistband with belt loops for a customised fit, zipped front pockets, a cargo pocket on the left leg, inner thigh vents, reinforced kick panels, inner boot gaiters with metal hooks and cuffs with bottom lock adjustments. And just like on the jacket, you can find the ellipse logo on the left leg whilst the Oakley logo sits at the back waist.

Roundup

Following in Sage’s footsteps, his signature outfit is ideal for the adventurous spirits who appreciate exploring what lies in and beyond the resorts. And, in order to do that properly, you need an outfit that’s up to the task. Which is exactly what Oakley’s put together here.

Pros:

  • Spacious, manoeuvrable and comfortable
  • A fit that will work on any type of body

Cons:

  • The white jacket might be hard to spot in the backcountry, and for a jacket that’s designed for having fun in fresh snow, that might end up causing issues if you come across more serious troubles (like an avalanche or getting lost from your group in a blizzard). Luckily, there’s also a red colourway!

Tester’s Verdict

Paul Wool – Snowboard Workshop Technician

“These pants are super comfy, fit really naturally with no weird bunching or creases straight out of the wrapper. They kept me warm & dry all day and fit with enough room to give plenty of mobility and freedom without being ultra baggy and swaggy.

One thing that often annoys me in snowboard pants is how the pockets sit, there’s nothing worse than super jiggly pockets that run the risk of sending a key pointy end first into your tender areas on a slam… And these pockets kept all my keys, tool etc. safely locked into place. It’s the little things that make you more comfortable on the hill after all.”
