Oakley Mod 1 Pro I.C.E 2023-2024 Snowboard Helmet Review

Tested and selected for our top 100 snowboard products of the year: the Oakley Mod 1 Pro I.C.E

  • Price: £136
  • Sizes: S, M, L, XL

Why We Chose The Oakley Mod 1 Pro I.C.E: It was already a great helmet, and now it’s updated for 23/24 with twICEme to make it the premium helmet for those who ride hard

Helmets used to be reserved solely for ski school kids and weird old guys who ski in jeans, but these days you’ll likely find a pretty even split of those who rock a lid and those who choose not to. Thanks in part to an evolution of styles and a growing number of riders concerned with head injuries, it’s more normal than ever to pop a helmet on your bonce when strapping in. There’s only one rule for helmets- no one over the age of 10 should be wearing a ‘wacky’ helmet cover. Ever.

For this season, Oakley’s MOD 1 Pro has been updated to include a clever new safety feature that’s given it an esteemed spot in the Whitelines 100. We got out on the hill and put this update through its paces, and our test team reported cushy fit, sleek aesthetics and supreme goggle compatibility.

Materials and Construction

Oakley uses a futuristic injection-moulded Dura-Matter shell, which is laid over an expanded polystyrene foam liner. This is your first line of defence against classic head injuries like fractured skulls but damage isn’t always as obvious when it comes to your noggin.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve taken a tumble or two on a snowboard, and we can all attest to the fact that there’s no rhyme or reason when it comes to falls. Oakley uses MIPS technology to reduce the likelihood of suffering a traumatic brain injury by lessening the rotational motion. When your head comes to an abrupt stop (like when you hit the deck), your brain will move or stretch.

MIPS works by redirecting and absorbing the energy from an angled impact, that would normally be unleashed on your brain. MIPS allows the helmet and your head to rotate independently, there’s 10-15mm of movement between your head and the helmet in any direction at the moment of impact. This stops one specific part of your brain being subjected to the majority of the strain and thus offers better protection.

Features

A new addition, and a welcome one, is twICEme, a medical ID chip that’s built into the MOD 1 Pro. In the event of an accident, responders can scan the chip with a smartphone to instantly get your medical information and your emergency contacts. Like your shovel and probe, you hope you’ll never have to use twICEme, but having it gives you a level of peace of mind that’s invaluable.

Features that you will be using and be thankful for every time you rock the MOD 1 Pro are the built-in vents, 360Fit BOA system, magnetic FIDLOCK buckle, cushy removable liner and goggle clip (it’s Oakley, of course, they weren’t gonna forget the goggles).

Roundup

We all know Oakley for their goggles and sunnies, the name itself is synonymous with quality when it comes to eyewear but they’re far from a one-trick pony. With an R&D department that’s almost obsessive in its approach, Oakley tackles the helmet market to offer lids that are as stylish as they are safe.
