Why we chose the The North Face FUTURELIGHT™ Steep Series Snowboard Jacket: It’s a completely revolutionary piece of kit.

Earlier this year when The North Face announced that they would be debuting FUTURELIGHT™ “the world’s most advanced breathable-waterproof outerwear technology” it tickled our curiosity. How, pray tell, would they achieve such a thing?

Well, it seems they’ve developed a new Nanospinning process which creates tiny holes that allow air to travel through while still maintaining total waterproofing. It’s similar to what other companies have done in the past, but The North Face seemed to have really cracked the code with FUTURELIGHT™.

“It’s lighter and more breathable than its competitors, allowing you to keep your jacket on despite temperature fluctuations”

It’s lighter and more breathable than its competitors, allowing you to keep your jacket on despite temperature fluctuations. The new membrane allows the material to be far more supple and soft than a traditional waterproof jacket, and gets rid of the crunchy-swish you get with a hard shell.

As far as taking a responsible stance on sustainable practices, The North Face have stepped up with the production of FUTURELIGHT™. To reduce their footprint, they’re using solar powered factories, non-PFC DWR, and recycled materials during manufacturing.

Comfort wise, The North Face seem to be on it. The chin guard is microfibre to stop it from rubbing when you’ve got the jacket done up, the pit zips will allow extra ventilation for those sweaty moments, and the back of the neck is coated in soft fibres.

“It has a helmet compatible, fully adjustable brimmed hood, to keep the worst of the elements at bay”

The snowskirt is elasticated round the waist, and the sleeves are able to be tightened with Velcro and sport an elastic patch. It has a helmet compatible, fully adjustable brimmed hood, to keep the worst of the elements at bay.

The jacket itself is packed with pockets, both interior and exterior. The sleeve has its dedicated pass pocket, with multiple chest pockets and hand warmer pockets on the outside. Inside you have both zipped pockets and larger open netting ones.
