Manufacturers often seem scared to describe any of their boots as stiff, presumably because it sounds less comfortable. But for powerful riders, a stiff boot is exactly what you need – which is why it’s refreshing to hear Nidecker describe their line-leading Talon as “stiffer than hell”. This is an unapologetically aggressive piece of footwear that’s loaded with tech features to ensure you can shred from first lift till last with no fatigue whatsoever.

Who Is The Nidecker Talon For?

Experienced riders who demand maximum response to crank high speed turns on the groomers and stomp heavy drops in the backcountry.

Shell & Outsole

As beefy as this boot is, it’s extremely lightweight. That’s thanks to the Armor-Tech construction that deploys two layers – a waterproof bladder and a tough exoskeleton – to provide shelter and support. Nidecker updated their lasts when they took on Flow a couple of years ago, so the shell is sloped for a better fit with your bindings (whether you run regular or rear entry system). The toe box is notably compact to reduce the chances of overhang.

Lacing comes courtesy of Boa, with two dials to independently adjust the upper and lower sections of the boot. The laces themselves are positioned asymmetrically to reduce pressure on the foot. A Vibram outsole provides top-notch traction, even on icy hikes.

Liner

This is Nidecker’s flagship boot, so it comes with their premium Gold Level heat moldable liner. It’s constructed from high-density foam (so it won’t lose its shape) with J-bars to support your ankle and a harness that allows you to adjust the upper and lower sections separately. The lace pulls are accessible at all times, so you can even crank it tighter on the hill, when the outer boot is closed.

The liner is a cosy place to be, too, with a padded cuff and tongue, as well as a fleece-lined footbed that uses three densities of EVA to provide targeted comfort and support.

“Nidecker have thrown everything at these boots”

Roundup

Nidecker have thrown everything at these boots. They’re light, they’re comfy, they will keep you dry on the deepest of powder days, and yes – they’re stiff as hell. Want to get loosy goosy in the mini pipe? Then these aren’t for you. Powerful freeriders who know exactly what they want, on the other hand… Well, they’ll want a pair of these.
