Who Is The Nidecker Odyssey For?

Women who see more beauty in a windlip than a pipe lip.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The outline of the Odyssey borrows heavily from the men’s Mellow. It’s a compact directional design with a huge nose that will float in deep snow with minimal effort. The tail has a wedge cut out of it to help it sink while keeping as much effective edge as possible within such a short overall silhouette.

The camber is set back to match the stance, providing agile response and great edge hold on harder snow – and yes, besides being a pow-friendly shape, this board is awesome for carving. Further forward, the profile merges into rocker to help lift the nose and keep turns feeling smooth. Nidecker call it Surfy Camrock, so again that should give you an idea of how the Odyssey feels to ride.

Construction and Materials

Like the vast majority of snowboards, the Odyssey is built using sandwich construction – which means it has robust sidewalls to protect the core. It’s a core worth protecting too, made from a clever mix of lightweight paulownia, strong beech hardwood, and some lively poplar and spruce.

The topsheet is laid up using triax fibreglass, which means the fibres run diagonally as well as up and down. That translates to a more responsive deck that won’t flap around when you’re really maching it. Carbon fibre has also been added to reinforce the nose, add a little snap to the tail and dampen any vibrations. All that said, the Odyssey’s flex pattern is mid-stiff rather than scary-stiff, so intermediates and up should feel comfortable from the get go. An ash veneer with a beautiful matte finish graphic rounds things off up top, while below they’ve fitted an N-7000 ‘sintruded’ base that’s less high maintenance than a full sintered base and almost as quick.

Roundup

If your idea of a good day on the hill is lapping the button lift at the park, then this board probably isn’t for you. On the other hand, if you prefer exploring everything the natural terrain has to offer – on and off the piste – then the Odyssey is your ticket to cruising, burning and turning in style.
