Who Is The Nidecker Micron Flake For?

Girls who can.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

There’s an unashamedly freestyle flavour to the Micron Flake, because Nidecker understand that kids want to get into the park as soon as possible. It’s a true twin silhouette that’s flat between the feet, with extended rocker towards the nose and tail. That means it’s less likely to catch an edge compared to traditional camber (ideal for learning your first turns) and it’s a little easier to press when the time comes to hit those boxes and rails. They’ve even included a little 3D shaping in the form of SideKicks – basically a steep scoop at each of the wide points to smooth out turn initiation and keep the tips surfing over slush, pow or crud.

The sidecut is centered, so switch riding is straightforward (or if your little one hasn’t yet figured out their stance, they can change the leading leg without having to remount the bindings).

Construction and Materials

It might be a kids board but the Micron Flake boasts the same build quality as Nidecker’s adult models – and a lot of great tech, too. At its heart is a full poplar core, reinforced by harder beech wood at the nose and tail for a little more ollie power. It’s a lively ride but thanks to that camrock profile and a relaxed biax weave topsheet it never feels too stiff; girls will find it easy to control and won’t be bucked off at the slightest mistake. Cementing the Micron Flake’s easygoing nature is a dampening layer in the topsheet which Nidecker call Absorbnid; it soaks up chatter and eases foot fatigue. An extruded N-5000 base prioritises durability over pure speed, which makes sense for a board that’s likely to take some punishment in the park.

Roundup

The youth market has exploded since snowboarding’s original 90s rebels grew up and had kids of their own. There’s a lot of competition for the parental dollar, and it shows in the sheer quality of boards like the Micron Flake. Nidecker have stepped up to the plate to create a girl’s model that is super easy to progress on yet doesn’t scrimp on tech. And with sizes to suit a broad age range, there’s a Micron Flake for every budding Sarka.
