Why we chose the Nidecker Lunar Snowboard Boots: They’re super light, with a rugged lacing system and premium heat moldable liner that delivers snug support.

Nidecker aren’t messing about with the new Lunar. It’s well specced, it’s light, and yes – it’s black. OK, there’s a subtle graphic going on around the side, and some luxurious touches like the fur-lined inner, but this is clearly a boot that means business. As anyone who’s followed the brand over the last couple of seasons knows, these guys really think about fit – including how it works with your bindings – and they’re not shy of including a bunch of high-end technology at a very fair price. In short, more than worthy of a closer look.

Who Is The Nidecker Lunar For?

Within the Nidecker range these are second only to the women’s Helios in terms of stiffness. They’re basically a tricked-out all-mountain freestyle boot aimed at experienced riders who like to go fast, chuck spray and throw some moves – wherever they are on the hill.

Shell & Outsole

All of Nidecker’s boots are 100% vegan, so the leather looks of the Lunar are just for show. It’s a PU shell that’s supremely waterproof and which flexes naturally thanks to a stretchy articulated section around the ankle. The asymmetric shape with its 3D molded tongue and a distinct slope across the forefoot is based on the Flow lasts, which are legendary for their comfort and the seamless way they fit into your bindings (both rear entry and regular two-straps).

The lacing system comes courtesy of Boa, so it’s tried-and-tested. The only historic weak point with this system has been the dials, which can get snapped off if you snag them and lead to a trip to the local snowboard shop for repair, but the new H4 coiler featured on the Lunar is made to be easily popped back on out in the field. Winner. They’re chunky too, so it’s never been easier (or quicker) to crank your boots tight and catch first lifts.

There are two lacing zones, each with a dedicated dial, so you can tighten (or ease off) the lower and upper foot depending on what feels most comfortable and/or where you want to focus the support.

The outsole is designed by the Italian mountaineering specialists at Vibram, which means it’s a quality piece of rubber that will keep you firmly on your feet whenever you’re hiking in slippery conditions or staggering out of the après bar.

Liner

As the flagship boot in Nidecker’s women’s range, the Lunar features a super technical ‘Silver Level’ liner that can be heat molded for a custom fit. Cranking the quick-pull inner lace tightens a heel harness to keep your foot even more securely in place, while a fleecy lining keeps you feeling cosy at all times.

In fact it seems those nice people at Nidecker really care about your tootsies, because they’ve also included something they call a ‘Space Blanket’ – basically an extra thermal layer between the outsole and the liner which prevents any cold from creeping up through the boot. Lov-erly.

Oh, and in case you think all that insulation might get a bit hot and sweaty at times, the liner comes treated with antimicrobial ‘Silvadur’ technology that eats odour-causing bacteria for breakfast, so you don’t have to. Now there’s an image.

Roundup

There’s an awful lot to like about the Nidecker Lunar. The boots feel light on your feet, so you’re never struggling to pop ollies or launch tricks, and the flex is right in the sweet spot: stiff enough to absorb landings and give you the support you need for fast turns, but with enough movement that your riding looks (and feels) relaxed. And thanks to the Dual Zone boa laces, you can customise the feel as much as you like at the twist of a dial. They’re also chock full of premium tech, they’re animal-friendly, and they come in a colour that’s never out of fashion – which is just as well, since these boots are built to last.
