Never Summer Proto Type II 2018-2019 Women’s Snowboard Review

UPDATE: Check out our review of the 2019/2020 Never Summer Proto Type Two here

As the supposed inventors of the combo profile (the jury’s out, but these guys have the patent at least), Never Summer specialises in all-mountain fare that suits the mix of camber and rocker. This is the women’s version of the Never Summer Proto Type Two snowboard, and it’s definitely got a go-anywhere vibe to it.

Starting with that profile, the rocker between the feet is very present, to the point that only the waist of the board will touch the ground when it’s unweighted. The camber sections under the feet are easy to engage, though, cancelling out the looseness that full rocker is often guilty of.

“There’s more tech in the Never Summer Proto Type Two than we have space to describe”

For a twin shape, keeping the nose up in powder is easily dealt with without end-to-end camber to fight against. It’s also a big help when you’re wanting a clean press on park features.

There’s more tech in the Never Summer Proto Type Two than we have space to describe. Key to its performance is the carbon stringers; one set under each foot for edge-to-edge stability and response, the other set connecting bindings to contact points for improved edge hold.

There’s also a section of malleable material right at the rocker section to reduce unwanted vibrations, a seriously light core, and an extra strong topsheet and sidewalls. It’s all wrapped up in an asymmetric shape that really can do it all.

Tester’s Verdict

Joy Dutchsnowboard-asylum.com

“The Proto felt very stable on piste, if a bit heavy, although it was a bit longer than I’d usually ride, which probably didn’t help with the weight.

“You could really feel the asymmetrical sidecut as you put in heelside turns”

You could really feel the asymmetrical sidecut as you put in heelside turns, just making the whole process a bit smoother. I like the fact that it was really quick from edge to edge, and this paired with the asym left you putting in mega carves with very little effort.

It’s a bit stiffer than what I usually choose to ride, but this would definitely be nice for more aggressive riders.”
