Moonchild Snowboards

Our pick of this season's best Moonchild Snowboards snowboards

It’s not uncommon for brands to emerge from the ashes of creative disputes, and Moonchild is no exception. Founded in 2015 by Jure Sodja, an avid snowboarder who had cut his teeth designing and building boards for Elan but had become disillusioned with the creative confines he faced. He was joined by CAPiTA R&D guru Marcus Montgomery and together the two embarked on a journey to build high-end snowboards that were truly innovative and different.

Despite being a relatively new company, Moonchild has a strong product line, with a mixture of unique offerings and more traditional shapes. They go full hog on the experimental front with their SkUnkWorX projects. Ever thought you’d see a snowboard shaped like a spatula or a pow surfer with a denim topsheet? Well, they exist and it was Moonchild who made them.

As well as having a full production line, Moonchild has the means to produce custom orders. You can create your dream snowboard, customising every feature to dial in your perfect ride.

Jure and Marcus are about as avid as they come when it comes to snowboarding, with voracious appetites for shredding and designing in equal measure. Quality is key with Moonchild, and the two owners make sure to have a hand in every part of their business, from product testing to shipping orders.

Two years on the Bounce the Moonchild Malibu has caught our attention, and this season it won a coveted spot in the Whitelines 100. Compared to some of the wacky shapes on offer, the Malibu looks pretty ordinary, but we assure you it’s anything but.

Keep your eyes on the Moonchild crew, we can see these guys becoming the next big thing amongst true shred aficionados.

Moonchild Malibu Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €579

Moonchild Snowboards was borne out of creative frustration. After churning out boards for other brands, two experienced shapers resolved to make their own. And they didn’t hold back.

A browse of the ‘Skunkworks’ range on their website shows just how far they’re prepared to go in search of a new snowboarding experience: reverse camber meets reverse taper, various “experimental holes” (including a full-on kitchen spatula design), and even a powsurfer with a real denim topsheet. Bonkers, yes – but endearingly so.

Who Is The Moonchild Malibu For?

If you need a break from the norm (but are still hopeful for a hell of a lot of pow days) then the Malibu has your name on it. Ideally you’ll have already had some experience with unconventional boards that have noses bigger than Cyril Sneer, but it’s not a requirement.

Moonchild Popsicle Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €489

Looking for a board that’ll float like a dream, but with plenty of pop? This women’s all-mountain deck from Moonchild has us frothing. While the boutique brand are known for their wild designs, the Popsicle is a more conventional yet equally fun model. The mellow camber profile, combined with the early rise rocker, is designed for powder days. However, it’s still super manoeuvrable on piste. Get ready for surfy turns through the deep stuff, as well as a decent flex for buttering and jibbing sidehits. No prizes for guessing why this board has become a top-seller since it was launched last season.

Moonchild Live Wire Snowboard 2022-2023

PRICE: €599

Moonchild catapulted onto the snowboard scene in 2017 with their quirky-shaped powder boards, crafted by two ex-Capita and Elan designers, Jure Sodja and Marcus Montgomery. The Live Wire is their advanced freeride deck, complete with a wide nose, backseat stance and rocker-camber profile for extra float on powder days. As the name suggests, it’s a bucking bronco that needs taming. Master it and you’ll find the Live Wire slices smoothly across icy groomers and holds stability at high speeds, thanks to the carbon stringers. Note: it only comes in 158cm. Get ready for one hell of a ride.
