Burton have teamed up with Mini to add a quirky new dimension to their competitions this season. The “Creative Use of Space Award” allows competitors in all of the Burton Global Open Series, a number of snowboarding events held in Europe, New Zealand, Canada and the USA to win $25,000 by making the best use of the run they are given. We’re not totally sure what this means, but it is encouraging more creative and stylish use of the course instead of the standard double cork tricks we see every year. This includes both the Halfpipe and Slopestyle events, with riders from all the competitions from the season going for the one prize.
A lot of big riders are behind this, and whether or not you buy the whole concept, there’s no doubt that Mini supporting snowboarding is sweet for promoting the sport. It’ll be interesting to see how riders push the boundaries on this one. At the BEO last week it was obvious that riders who fell early were encouraged to keep riding and go for this award even when they knew they weren’t going to make the podium, making for some interesting and unique runs.
After the Burton Global Open Series has finished, Burton and Mini will post up their favourites for you to vote for on Facebook, with a trip all in for four persons to one Burton Global Open Series event in season 2011/12. Here’s the link:
