Men’s Slopestyle Finals | Gold for Parrot, Su Yiming takes Silver, and McMorris Bronze

Drama and controversy as Max Parrot wins Olympic Gold in the men's slopestyle in Beijing

Canadian Max Parrot took his first-ever Olympic slopestyle gold medal at Genting Snow Park this morning, followed by China’s 17-year-old Su Yiming in silver and Canada’s Mark McMorris in third.

At the end of the first runs, it was defending slopestyle gold medalist Red Gerard who found himself in first place, followed by the 27-year-old Italian underdog Emiliano Lauzi in second, and Canada’s Max Parrot in third.

But Parrot and Su Yiming both secured their medal scoring points in the second runs. Su Yiming scored an 88.70 with a super technical and creative run, incorporating a front flip nose grab off the roof feature at the top of the course and a super clean frontside 1440, switch backside 1620, and backside 1800.

“Did the judges miss this? Was the rest of his run strong enough to compensate for the error? Did someone forget to tell FIS what counts as a grab?”

Men's slopestyle finl results

Parrot’s scored a 90.96 which was enough to keep him in first place for the rest of the contest. However, the result is likely to kick up some controversy, as the slo-mo replays revealed Parrot missing his grab on the ‘twisted sister’ feature and, instead, having to go for a double knee grab – something that would mark his score down substantially. Did the judges miss this? Was the rest of his run strong enough to compensate for the error? Did someone forget to tell FIS what counts as a grab? Chances are the debate will rage for a while…

Regardless, his competitive ability won’t ever be called into doubt. Parrot, who won silver in the Olympics slopestyle in 2018, was subsequently diagnosed with cancer in December that year before making a full recovery and returning to competitive snowboarding eight months later to claim gold in X-Games Big Air.

Controversial? The 'double knee' grab that still won gold.

Competitive powerhouse Mark McMorris has won gold in virtually every snowboard contest asides from the Olympics. His third and final run looked strong but was only enough to secure him a bronze medal finish – the disappointment seemingly visible through his body language… He’s a class act though, McMorris was quick to congratulate his teammate and given the competitive field will undoubtedly be stoked to take home another slopestyle medal.
