Why we chose the McNair Merino Mountain Shirt Snowboard Mid Layer: Apres style meets alpine performance.

Gone are the days of wearing Grandpa’s old, baubled, stinking fleece to keep you warm and wicking on the mountains. The McNair Mountain Shirt blends trusted, reliable materials with a sleek and stylish look to give you a mid-layer that turns heads from Alaska to apres.

The concept was simple, after multiple seasons in the mountains, snowboard coach and backcountry guide Neil McNair thought there had to be a better alternative to performance mountain clothing that wasn’t wrapped in plastic and neon coloured – something that blended in with the mountains, rather than stood out against them.

“All the shirts are ethically and traditionally hand made up t’road in Yorkshire, where they can be custom made for every shape and size”

After looking back to a bygone era, when mountaineers used boiled wool and Dachstein gloves in the harshest winter environments, the concept of a natural fibre, merino wool shirt was born. The McNair Shirt keeps the elements out, wicks the sweat away, and works equally well as a mid-layer on the wildest wintery days, or your outer-layer for springtime touring and slush laps in the sun.

All the shirts are ethically and traditionally hand made up t’road in Yorkshire, where they can be custom made for every shape and size (including a longer, riding specific cut), and available in a medium or thick wool blend in a whole stash of colourways.

Like the best mid-layers (or at least the ones you’ll get your money’s worth out of), the shirt looks equally at home in the city as it does up in resort. However, there’s plenty of features throughout that cater specifically to rider’s needs.

The shirt is slim fitting around the body, so (even if you are) it won’t be flapping around the pistes all day, but the shoulders have been made with extra room for mobility alongside articulated elbows to get down and dirty when cranking out those euro-carves. There’s also a full-length baffle with dual fastening running down the inside which prevents the warmth from escaping when the winds are bracing.

And best of all? You don’t even need to wash it. Just treat it like you would your drunk mate – stick it out in the fresh air for a while and let nature take care of the rest.
