Why we chose the Lib Tech Jamie Lynn Short Wide Snowboard: With a facelift for 2020, the Short Wide is more versatile than ever.

Jamie and the bods at Lib Tech went back to the drawing board for 2020/21, and this year the Short Wide is… longer and narrower. Not by much though, it’s still the board you know and love, just with a few tweaks to bolster its versatility. This is your volume shifted powder ripper built for getting pitted 2000m above sea level.

It’s fair to say that Jamie Lynn is an uncontested legend in the game, his bolshy style paved the way for many riders and helped to transition snowboarding away from skiing and into its own entity. Drawing inspiration from surf and skate culture, the Short Wide is an amalgamation of all things sideways.

“This is your volume shifted powder ripper built for getting pitted 2000m above sea level”

Blurring the lines between freestyle and freeride, the Short Wide is part of Lib Tech’s ExperiMental Division. You just have to clap eyes on this little beauty to see where it calls home, it flourishes in nipple deep champagne powder, tight tree runs and open bowls.

A huge 27cm waist width keeps you floating no matter how deep it is, the Short Wide is 648 square inches of pure levitation. Add this to the 3-inch setback, and you’ve got a snowboard that would give anything on the market a run for its money when its been spewing.

Shape wise you’ve got a long scooped nose, with a less pronounced stubby tail ideal for throwing fat slashes when the mood strikes. You get a lot of manoeuvrability from the rear thanks to the tapered tail and while you probably wouldn’t want to land switch off a backcountry booter, you’re just gonna have to work on rounding out that spin.

Using Lib Tech’s C3 Camber profile for maximum pop and power, the Short Wide is punchy and aggressive by nature. A minimal rocker between the feet transitions into longer camber sections delivering precision and control by the bag load. The camber zones bring a dynamic energy to the board, springboarding back your input like a preloaded spring, with the central rocker easing out turn initiation and gripping through the arc of the turn.

“It’ll feel more like your old school camber cannon than it has in previous years”

A super tight 6m sidecut means this thing turns on a dime. It’s ideal for dipping in and out of trees, swerving jerrys and laying out fat carves on the corduroy. Thanks to the wider platform underfoot, you can really get down and dirty without worrying about catching toes and run flatter binding angles too. Obviously, it’s not as quick edge to edge as something narrower, but that’s not why you’re buying it, this is for your elbows down eurocarves, not brushing up your super G slalom skills.

Unusually for a Mervin made snowboard, the Short Wide doesn’t use their Magne-Traction edge profile. They’ve done away with it this year to give more of a traditional feel to the snowboard, it’ll feel more like your old school camber cannon than it has in previous years.

Even with the updates the JL Short Wide isn’t a quiver killer, this is a board you have in your collection for the dreamiest of pow days. Even if it only makes it out of your house a few days each season, you can guarantee those will be the days you remember the most.

“Lib Tech Snowboards Jamie Lynn Short Wide is a short and wide fully cambered freeride snowboard, designed for floating and slashing powder stashes. The JL Short Wide is 150cm long with a 27cm waist, the short slightly tapered wide shape offers up bag loads of float in the powder.

The Short Wide carves well on the groomers and is super responsive edge to edge. I found the Short Wide wasn’t a snowboard to switch off and cruise. It expects a rider to be on it or you’ll get spanked. The Jamie Lynn Short Wide is a great choice as powder board for an advanced rider’s quiver.”
