No-one does more with what they’ve got than the Lecht locals – remember the famous ‘patch’ session? Thanks to some decent dumps in the last couple of weeks, Scotland’s smallest resort has a lot to work with, and this past weekend saw an awesome kicker sesh go down. Frazer Rennie and Ben Kinnear were among those getting stuck in – here’s what they had to say:
It’s an exciting time in UK snowboarding – recent snowfall across the country, the BBC showing a fly-on-the-wall documentary of life at Cairngorm, and Fergus Ewing announcing last week that £5.5 million will be invested into the Scottish ski resorts. After a good snowfall last week, most of the Scottish resorts have a lot more to play with. The ever-reliable Nick at The Lecht was able to shape a number of new features in time for the high pressure currently sitting over the North East. Underneath the chairlift at the top of the grouse run are four smaller jumps, for which you need a reasonable amount of speed to make it safely onto the landing. The rail park is set up at the bottom of the hill under the chair, with another kicker to the side. To the east of the Falcon tow are the two bigger jumps. Taking advantage of the blue skies and freshly groomed setup were some well kent locals including Frazer Rennie, Kevin Cowie and Steve Cassie. First on the scene this morning, though, was a bus load of Aberdeen groms, excited at the prospect of getting involved after a couple of weeks of bad weather and exam-induced lack of shred. After a few speed checks on the nicely lofty take off, the young guns were quick to step up and ensure they made the most of the weather window. Among these wee rippers was Fin Bremner, not long back from a superb result of 4th place at the Italian leg of World Rookie Tour. Fin was putting steeze with ease on everything he did, spinning every direction up to some solid 9’s. The rest of the young guns were getting stuck in too, even showing some of the old ones up with their methods! Mind you, there’s still no-one who can throw a smooth back 1 like Cassie… The session was one of the best in years – here’s to more of the same before long! – Fraz & Ben
