Why we chose the Kinco 901T Snowboard Mitts: If you know, you know…

Let’s be real, the snowboard industry (like any other recreational activity) is filled with a whole lotta marketing hype, hyperbole, and pro/influencer endorsements that can often become a bit of a minefield to navigate and identify where the genuinely great products are to be found.

“First off – durability”

Well, let us lay it out for you here. Kinco are about as far from the snowboard industry as you can get. A family run business from Portland Oregon, their products are more commonly found in welding factories, farms and industrial warehouses. But if there’s been one consistent over the past few seasons of board tests, it’s the overwhelming amount of our test team who always rock up with a pair of these mitts on their hands.

By our rough calculations, Kinco have spent approximately $0.00 of marketing budget in the snowboard industry over the course of their brand’s history, but we’re here to fly the flag on their behalf.

First off – durability. These things genuinely might outlast your boots, board and jacket combined. The full-grain pigskin palm and suede pigskin back provide incredibly hard-wearing protection to the surface of the mitts. Pigskin patches are then stitched onto the palm and thumb to reinforce the high-wear areas. The patches are sewn on with extra-strength Draylon thread which we’ve yet to see work lose after multiple seasons of riding in them. Granted, all this chat of pigs doesn’t make them a very vegan-friendly option, but if your prioritising “sustainability” in your snowboard gear, the lifespan of a product is one of the most important considerations.

“As for the internals of the mitt, they’re about as warm as anything we’ve tried”

In terms of treating the fabric and ensuring it retains waterproofing, the Kinco 901T mitts come complete with a sachet of Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather. Simply apply this to the outer fabric, let it dry, and you’re good to go. It’s super easy to top this up during the season if you feel them starting to wet out at all, too.

As for the internals of the mitt, they’re about as warm as anything we’ve tried. Heavyweight Heatkeep insulation provides individual insulation, wicking and breathability with a glove-styled liner that individually wraps each finger. They’re arguably too warm for spring riding, and won’t exactly be practical when out on the skin track. But for early season sub-zeros and blasting resort on powder days, these things are as warm and comfortable as anything else we’ve tried — and about half the cost too…
