Okay, so normally we wouldn’t ever recommend buying something purely based off the looks but we’re willing to make an exception here. Not only is this a prime example of pure distilled nostalgia, but the deck itself is actually a ripper.

Designed by the man with possibly one of the most impressive resumes in snowboarding- Kurt Heine, the Kemper Apex 90/91 is a work of art we’re desperate to hang on our wall, but truth be told, we’d rather be out riding it.

“Obviously, this shape lends itself to riding in deep snow”

Who Is The Kemper Apex 90/91 For?

There’s a certain sentimentality that comes with this board, meaning that you’re probably a rad dad trying to reclaim the serotonin you had on tap when you were riding in the blissful heyday of snowboarding in the 90’s. But either way, this is ideal for a pow fiend who’s content with cutting up the corduroy when the tide is low.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The graphics aren’t the only throwback here, this shape harks back to the early days of snowboarding, when true twins were but a twinkle in the eye of freestylers across the globe.

Obviously, this shape lends itself to riding in deep snow, but add in the tapered outline, setback inserts and early rise rocker in the nose and you’ll be floating with ease whether it’s knee or nipple deep. The slight cutout tail once again reduces the surface area at the back of the board, helping to sink it down into the snow and keep the nose up and out.

Get the Apex on hardpack and you’ll have just as good a time, the tight sidecut will have you whipping through turns and slashing through trees, and the extra width through the body allowing you to get right up onto your edges without catching toes. By each set of inserts, Kemper have disrupted the sidecut to add an extra point of contact with the snow, lovely for gripping on corduroy and a lifesaver when the conditions are sketchy.

“While what’s inside the Kemper Apex might not catch your eye like the topsheet does, it’s no less cool”

Construction and Materials

While what’s inside the Kemper Apex might not catch your eye like the topsheet does, it’s no less cool. A blended wood core combines poplar and bamboo, mixing lightweight durability with the snappy and springy properties you get from bamboo. What you lose in dynamic pop from having a flat base, you make up for with this snappy core.

This is sandwiched between reactive triax fibreglass, so when you’re hooning along on your tasty sintered base, you’ll still be able to control the board without it being twitchy.

“The Apex is also an absolute rocket”

Roundup

Yeah, Kemper snowboards are awesome to look at, a stroll down memory lane visually, but the Apex is also an absolute rocket that you can really push your limits on.
