When we first saw this one, we assumed Jeremy Jones might have accidentally added the Mind Expander to his ‘make an Ultra version of it’ list. After all, the original has the personality of a half-baked surf bum, not a carbon-wielding Formula One engineer. However, we’re prepared to admit when we’re wrong. .

Who Is The Jones Ultra Mind Expander For?

If you want to know that what’s under your feet really is the creme de la creme in terms of construction and materials, but aren’t only interested in finding a gnarly face and making the Grim Reaper blink first, the Jones Ultra Mind Expander could be the one.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

As far as the shape and sidecut are concerned, you’re very much in OG Mind Expander territory, right down to the millimetre. That means you get a slightly shorter, wider deck that’s nose-heavy for impeccable float, but also nimble as hell. Tree-packed powder fields are a must on this thing.

The big difference between this and its mellower brother is the profile. The addition of camber here means that you get more edge bite, allowing you to temporarily park the surfy vibes in favour of gripping and ripping on firmer snow.

Construction and Materials

As is standard with Jones’ Ultra editions, just about every feature of the Ultra Mind Expander has been souped up. The core is a little stiffer, as is the triax fibreglass, so you’ll need to put more work in to tame this one. That’s all sandwiched between a shock absorbing ash topsheet and silly-fast sintered base, keeping you in full control even as you reach previously unobtainable speeds.

Despite all this, the Jones Ultra Mind Expander is still a little friendlier to ride than, say, the Ultra Flagship or Ultra Mountain Twin.

Roundup

You’re being asked to part with quite a lot of wedge for something that looks like it might fall between stalls. However, given the levels of quality and durability now present on a board that hasn’t lost its sense of fun in the upgrade, ‘best of both worlds’ may be more accurate.
