Why we chose the Jones Talon Splitboard Poles: Upgraded, re-designed, and extra tough.
The Jones crew only recently expanded into the world of backcountry and splitboard accessories, but they haven’t wasted any time in refining these products to the highest standards. Both the Talon and Talon Pro poles have been re-designed for 2019/20 and offer splitboarders a solid pair of contact points for even the most demanding ascents.
Though not quite as light as the featherweight carbon edition, the Talons are built with super-tough 7075-T6 recycled aluminium which, according to the man himself, are “almost impossible to bend”. Even when fully extended to their maximum length of 135cm, the combination of the tougher metal construction and Powerlock 3.0 mechanisms keep them rock solid when you’re placing most of your weight (and all of your trust) in them.
“Among the most notable of this year’s upgrades are the new Snow Claw Baskets”
Among the most notable of this year’s upgrades are the new Snow Claw Baskets. This unique attachment allows the basket to “float” up to 32° independently on the pole shaft to sit flush and grip the terrain, regardless of the gradient or snow condition.
The all-new dual-density Scraper Grip is ergonomically designed to be as comfortable as possible for those long slogs out in the backcountry. The extended EVA foam handle allows you to grip further down the pole when traversing on a tricky angle whilst keeping your shoulders completely level. Little details like these don’t always seem essential, but when you’re five hours into your route and starting to feel the entire left-hand-side of your body cramp up you’ll notice their absence.
