The Jones Project X is named in honour of Xavier Nidecker, the designer whose mad-scientist ideas get channelled into this insanely premium board every year (although we like to think that this astute observation has played a part too). The Project X has seen a few changes over the years as the tech evolves, and 2021/22 is no exception.

Who Is The Jones Project X For?

We’ll address the gold-plated, ruby-encrusted elephant in the room; there will always be an argument that any board with a four-figure pricetag has the ‘more-money-than-sense’ demographic in mind. That being said, there are plenty of line items to go through here, and they all add up to a seriously premium stick.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

The Jones Project X uses a standard model from the brand’s line as a foundation. In the past, that has been the Aviator, but in the last couple of years the Jones Stratos has done the honours. Given that it’s one of our favourite boards (see our latest review for the full list of reasons why) [link], we’re off to a good start.

Despite the myriad extra bells and whistles under the hood (more of which in a moment), the personality of the Jones Project X remains as accessible and versatile as the Stratos.

“Like Iron Man’s suits, the Jones Project X takes big leaps forward in tech with each iteration”

Construction and Materials

Like Iron Man’s suits, the Jones Project X takes big leaps forward in tech with each iteration. The big addition for 2021/22 is Koroyd, an aerospace-grade material that’s been laid into the nose of the board in order to seriously increase dampening.

Elsewhere it’s got plenty more of Jones’ established top tech, including carbon stringers that let you ollie higher and react quicker. The core is also lighter, and the base is faster – not just compared to the Stratos, but to just about anything that you’re likely to encounter this side of Stark Industries.

Roundup

Yes, this is a frankly eye-watering amount of money to spend on a snowboard – but even if you can’t afford a Jones Project X, keep it on your radar. After all, what seems premium today will eventually become the industry standard, and the Jones design team certainly know what they’re doing when it comes to raising the bar. If you //can// buy one, we wish you the best with it – just make sure you buy a board lock too…
