The Jones brand definitely looks after the groms, with pint-sized versions of the Flagship [link], Mind Expander [link] and even the Solution splitboard up for grabs. While the Jones Prodigy has its own identity, it might help to think of it as a mini Mountain Twin. One board to rule it all, essentially.

Who Is The Jones Prodigy For?

If the day your young charge mastered the falling leaf is a distant memory, then turn to the Jones Prodigy. It’s considerably techier than most junior offerings, so will help bushy-tailed riders capitalise on that enthusiasm and get well on their way to all-mountain competence.

Shape, Profile and Sidecut

While not completely unheard of, it’s rare to see a kids’ snowboard with a 3D base. The Jones Prodigy has a lovely bevel around the nose and the tail, making edge changes less twitchy. Thanks to the narrower waist, the transition is as rapid as it is smooth.

A blunt nose and tail also make the Prodigy a lighter and easier to spin in the air when the time comes. Given its twin flex profile and freestyle-friendly profile (camber between the feet for pop, rocker at each end for presses and butters), taking it to the park is a must. On the piste, the same ‘Traction Tech’ wavy edges found on Jones’ adult boards deliver some welcome extra grip.

Construction and Materials

Jones hasn’t gone fully tech-mad here; no carbon lattice, no basalt stringers, no slick-but-delicate base material. The Jones Prodigy has a poplar core between layers of biax fibreglass, a combo that’s as classic as supermarket-brand peanut butter on white bread; Simpler, cheaper, but absolutely hits the spot.

The extruded base is plenty fast enough, and will still be in good nick when the time comes for its rider to scale up. Any kid raised on a diet of Greta Thunberg’s Insta-stories will also appreciate its strong eco-credentials, with natural and/or recycled materials used at just about every opportunity.

Roundup

As inspiring as a sweet-looking board can be – one that looks just like mum’s and/or dad’s, even – steer clear of this one until junior has put some of the work in already. There are more cost-effective ways to get him or her linking turns – but once they’ve genuinely got the bug, the Jones Prodigy is their ticket to the next level.
