Jones Presents: Where Land Ends

The Jones crew head to Chile for a Southern Hemisphere adventure

You may know Chile best as a producer of some of the worlds finest red wine, but it’s also home to some of the most diverse terrain on the planet. It houses the worlds driest desert, a temperate rain forest, an awe-inspiring string of volcanoes, a smattering of ecologically rich archipelagoes and the mountainous Andes.

“Forrest Shearer, Jeremy Jones, Nick Russell and Andrew Miller assembled and made the long trip south of the equator to Chile”

Forrest Shearer, Jeremy Jones, Nick Russell and Andrew Miller assembled and made the long trip south of the equator to Chile to get a taste of some of the wonders the country has on offer.  The crew are keen to sample both Chile’s snow-covered spines and its legendary swell so they hook up with long-time friend, Raman Navarro, a pro surfer whose local knowledge will help them root out the best spots.

Moving south out of Santiago, Chile’s capital city and the bustling heart of the country, they find themselves leaving the tourist traps behind and diving deep into the local culture. The crew is struck when they see the biological effects of the countries considerable timber industry. Indigenous vegetation is cast aside to make room for trees that devastate the native environment.

The crew settle on the coast and get a few days of big barrels and pumping breaks, and despite the all-time conditions they seemingly have the place to themselves. Once more on the move, the gang head even further south. Now on the hunt for snow, they venture deep into Volcano territory.

Setting up camp on the top of a rocky outcrop they hunker down and scout lines and spines they dream of riding. The untouched zones span to the horizon and much of it is only reachable by splitboarding. The weather conditions in the Andes are unpredictable and savage at times, but when it breaks the crew strap in and go for the ride of their lives.

“I believe you need a revolution every now and then to shake things up, we have certainly reached that time, an environmental revolution has to happen”

It’s thought that Chile got its name from the Mapuche word ‘chili’ roughly translated to ‘where the land ends’. It’s only fitting when the Jones crew headed down to this South American gem, which is steeped in tradition, that they paid homage to the heritage of the country. Seeing the changes in the land, and hearing first hand from the local population how they’re fighting off the sacrificing of their homeland for financial gain strikes a chord with them. “I believe you need a revolution every now and then to shake things up, we have certainly reached that time, an environmental revolution has to happen.”
