Jones Nomad 2017-2018 Splitboard Skins Review

As well as a pretty substantial range of snowboards, Jeremy Jones puts his name to certain bits of backcountry kit too. All of it’s been extensively tried and tested by the man himself, so you know it’s something in which you can put your faith. Case in point: these Jones Nomad splitboarding skins.

“These glide well across more level terrain, making life a whole lot easier when on long tours, but can also get a decent grip with the snow on steep climbs”

These Swiss-made skins are made from roughy 2 parts Mohair to one part synthetic nylon. This particular blend is used because it glides well across more level terrain, making life a whole lot easier when on long tours, but can also get a decent grip with the snow on steep climbs. It’s not an easy balance to strike, but the Jones Nomad skins pull it off.

You can either buy these pre-cut to the size you need, or you can get ones that you trim yourself. At the top of both is a metal loop that’ll sit nicely over the front of each half of your splitboard. They differ at the tail end, though, but both systems work well.

The pre-cut models have a (newly-revamped) Quick Tension tail clip that works perfectly with the notches found in the tail of any Jones splitboard. If you’ve picked up a Jones Solution, for example, this will be the quickest and most straightforward way to go.

“A special coating ensures they stay as dry as possible even in wet snow, which increases their effectiveness and prolongs their life”

The the trim-to-fit versions come a universal clip and all the bits and pieces you need to attach it. It’s worth doing your research before breaking out the skin cutter, but for those who like to get a bit more hands on, not to mention those who don’t have a Jones board with the notches), this is the way to go.

With either system, you can have confidence in the Jones Nomad skins every time you venture out. A special coating ensures they stay as dry as possible even in wet snow, which increases their effectiveness and prolongs their life.

For most of us, the up is never going to be as much fun as the down – but thanks to the Jones Nomad splitboard skins, it doesn’t need to be a chore either.

Trade Secrets

Jeremy Jones – Owner, Jones

The Jones skin program has been a steady evolution. It’s amazing how challenging it was to produce the perfect skin and tail clip. We’ve finally hit the bullseye with the Nomad Skin and the new Quick Tension Tail Clip.

The Nomads are lightweight, packable, yet super durable. We’re also using a new glue formula for better performance in the bitter cold.

The new Quick Tension Clip is something we’ve been dreaming about for a long time too. It is simple, but as solid as it gets. Once you set it, your tail clip is never gonna slip off your board.
